what an amazing thread - what a superb roadtrip. I'm impressed you did it all in that little car as well - I would have wanted a 4x4. Some beautiful photos too - such incredible wilderness.

Amazing. I've been up there myself (Winter 2008). In winter the roads are teeming with caribou, which is a goddam nuisance. Spent 4 weeks at Sakami, which is pretty much Club Med as far as far north accommodations go. Anyway, enough about me...well done.

Simply a fantastic photo tour! And to quote everyone else, you had a huge set of balls to even travel that far out to the middle of nowhere just to say you did!

Amazing. Reminds me a bit of the Dalton Highway in Alaska.

What a fantastic adventure. Props for being so intrepid. This is an amazing set of shots, especially the auroras. I'd kill to see one of those in real life.

Northern lights are still something I'm waiting to see. I guess I have to drive 4k km due north to see them. Way cool tour. I love the middle of nowhere.

^ Just find a (very) dark and isolated spot in your location (Minnesota), if that is possible, and you might be able to see them if you look carefully. It sure doesn't compare to what you see up north, but it remains a enjoyable sight. I managed to see northern lights right in the middle of New Hampshire.

hehe! The northern lights, at least those I saw, aren't very bright, well not enough to keep me awake... The curtains were there for some privacy. Some times I slept in a parking lot or in a camp ground, I didn't want anybody to notice me, just wanted to play it low profile! I left one window slightly open, and fitted a mosquito screen on it too. Duck tape is your best friend during those trips! . The coldest night was the one under the aurora, it dropped to 5 celcius if i remember well.

My days of spontaneously jumping in the car and driving aimlessly nowhere are now long over, with a wife and two kids at home. Thanks for the vicarious trip, sir. Fantasique.

Ditto for Saskatchewan.

For my job I've been traveling all over SK. I've never made it as far North as you AX, but into Saskatchewan's Northern Provincial Forest (Boreal). Very similar to your pictures. Except your photos make me want to go further North.

Awesome job. Thanks!

Amazing photos of a truly unique trip! So glad you posted them. Love the aurora photos. I've seen dim ones twice from southern BC but nothing remotely comparable to those photos. Awesome job!

Incredible! I want to do this now. That back-car gettup looks really comfortable, actually.
