29 Harriet St. restoration

I didn't see anything on Forge & Foster's website, but I imagine it will be on their projects page at some point: https://forgeandfoster.ca/projects/

Hamilton real estate investment firm Forge & Foster has a new restoration project on its hands, a former cigar factory in Strathcona built in 1913. The building at 29 Harriet St. was originally the home of the Harper-Presnail Cigar Company, a company founded by William Harper and William and Thomas Presnail. The employees of Tuckett Tobacco, located at Queen Street and York Boulevard, left to start their own company and commissioned architect Lindsey Wardell to design the building, according to a Forge & Foster release.

The renovations underway include “heritage enhancements” to the interior, including restored hardwood flooring, and an exterior wall mural on a vinyl banner affixed by a frame. The company is hoping to populate the building with creative and film industry businesses, noting the proximity to the west harbour film studio.

In case anyone else was unsure where it was: https://www.google.ca/maps/place/29+...!4d-79.8744992

Near Hess & Cannon, basically.

Thanks Matt -- I looked up the location and meant to post it too, but forgot.

These smaller restorations/renos may not have the same impact as something big like the Westinghouse building or the factories at the Innovation Park, but they're interesting nonetheless and it's great to come across them by chance. There's one not far from my home that I just noticed a few weeks ago while walking: Allenby Lofts, at 357 Hunter St. W

Gorgeous building with an interesting past. Hoping those renovations will be fitting and not half-assed.

It was noted in the part of the story I didn't quote:
The cigar factory stopped operation by 1929, later becoming the 75-year home for Felton Brush Company, which is still located there and sold the building to Forge & Foster in the spring.

Felton will remain in the two lower floors until December when it moves to a new location

They have a Burlington St. address too though; maybe they're consolidating there:
