Thx BRR :-)

"The Helmsman" (Carl Romanelli), Burton Chace Park, Marina Del Rey:

lapl (herald examiner, 1986)

Text from the plaque:

"For many years, this statue stood in front of and was a trademark for the world renowned Helms bakery on Venice boulevard in Los Angeles. On October 6, 1971, it was generously donated to the Marina by the Helms family. In 1975, through the generosity of the Marina's Yacht clubs it was provided with a new helm."

The text below comes courtesy of the Civic Art department, Los Angeles County Arts Commission:

"The Helmsman is an approximately 10-foot tall cast concrete figure in staunch repose with both hands clenched on a wooden helm. His posture is tight, his body hunched over, and his expression determined. Although formerly the symbol of the unfaltering delivery service of the Helms Bakery, The Helmsman fits perfectly in this maritime environment."

- public art in LA

And if you're missing the sound of the Helms delivery truck "toot-toot", it's here

ETA:

On Thursday LA curbed published a little appreciation of some of DTLA's iconic buildings which have survived the decades, with Then & Now pix, if anyone's interested.

d.
Thanks T2...I've haven't seen that truck nor heard the familiar toot in many years. I think I'll have a nostalgic jelly donut and meditate on all those past pleasures.

A little overwhelming for one post--one or two at a time might have more impact. Just a thought.
I have said the same thing to BRR numerous times in the past.
And now other members are contacting me with the same complaint.

Please BRR...limit (or at least space out) your posts.
The photographs are fine but not in an endless avalanche.

Those that do not enjoy a member's posts may add that member to their Ignore List to tailor their personal version of the thread to their sensibilities. It's as easy as that.

Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments." [1923]

We have discussed the silent era set pieces that were buried in the sand at Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes.

Recently, a 2nd Sphinx head was (re)discovered. This one weighs in at 300 lbs!

& it's the first artifact preserved with the original paint intact. pretty cool huh!

You can read about the discovery HERE

photos galore....

Call me weird but I like BRR's posts with all them photos.....

I scroll through them on the down-button but I stop and really drink in (phrasal verb) some of them. I feel like I'm in a time-warp.

I like them also but the repairs-maintenance on such a brand is costly here in Los Angeles.

Me too (and I'd never call you weird).

My mom had, and loved, a 1955 two-tone blue Coupe de Ville with a (if I'm remembering correctly) baby-blue brocade interior with snake skin trim on the seats. They really don't make 'em like that anymore. So much chrome.

Does the B/G Sandwich Shop ring a bell for anyone?

EBAY

outside of the package

& here's the back.

ebay

I realize it's a 'Good Luck Charm' but why the five digit number and why return it?

(did they give these out while waiting for your burger )

This might be a Toilet room key chain? Remember how many businesses kept track of their restroom keys? One had the key chained to a spare tire! or a ten pound steel wrench

Maybe CBD, but a bathroom key disguised as a good luck charm? (& why the high number?)

I wonder where exactly this little lodge was located?

"Sycamore Lodge Club House San Gabriel Mountains, Photograph ARNOLD Pasadena"

EBAY

I see it says Sycamore 'Shade' Lodge.

interior

EBAY

This is what you call cozy.

the seller adds:

"This would be in Sycamore Canyon in the local San Gabriel Mountains just above Pasadena here in Los Angeles County
and the area was very popular with hunting lodge places and recreation hiking and camping with Mt Lowe and Mt Wilson
and so many other trails locations and such. These places came and went through the decades with some wiped out due to a fire
or flood or just being abandoned."

The photographer is identified on the front and back as A. E. Arnold 111 North Bonnie Avenue Pasadena Calif

While trying to find more info on the Harriet Walke case.

I found this clipping of an assault on a Harriet Walker.

san bernardino sun

When I started this post I thought this happened in May 1935. I had a theory that this might be the same woman. (with a typo 'r' added to the end of Walke)

but I just double checked & it happened in 1936, 9 months after the Harriet Walke murder.

Oh well.

I have a similar item and it is just a key ring, my item has no numbers. I guess you register your name and get an assigned number so if your lost keys are returned to a Sandwich Shop you may get them back.

OK, now it's beginning to make sense. Thanks HG.

Similar to this Rosslyn Hotel fob, except for a sandwich shop.

Makes perfect sense for a hotel. (but a sandwich shop?) -not so much.
