No mention yet of the recount for Aldermanic ballots that is happening in Ward 14 today? I wonder what is up?

My thoughts is that they discovered a problem with someone who was counting that made them ineligible or something procedural didn't happen as it should have. There was far more then enough margin between the top two and from what the media is reporting the returning officer, not a candidate, requested the recount.

Mike Pal in Ward 9 is pushing for a recount:

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Ca...134/story.html

Mike Pal had been an aldermanic assistant for Ric McIver's team. Ward 9 is kinda pieshaped and so diverse in it's composition that it would have been fairly strategic for Ric. Only 495 votes separated him and Carra.

Also had read that Peter Demong's (knocked out incumbant Linda Fox-Mellway) campaign manager was Craig Chandler.

There must be a reason why Mike Pal's recount request has been turned down and Ward 14 has a recount occuring as we speak.

Personally I am quite happy with G-C Carra winning in ward 9, he will be a great fit with Nenshi and others on council.

The Calgary Herald breaking news says that their were more votes counted for ward 14 alderman than there were ballots distributed. In other words, something funny going on.

I would imagine it is just a case of people double counting ballots for whatever reason. This is a wait and see situation. Maybe something funny is going on, but it is probably just an honest mistake.

It certainly could be an honest mistake, but I'm guessing that there is a significant difference, or else it wouldn't be an issue. Do you recount if the difference is just 100? Likely not, when the difference is 1300 votes.

The person elected may end up being the same, but I'm going to guess that the vote count will look significantly different after the recount.

This comment in the Herald story was awesome:

Hmm....Mike Pal requested a recount and was denied by Clifford.

However, a recount was requested by her for ward 14....

And to top it all off, she is wearing purple in the photo! something seems really fishy here.....I really think someone should investigate the city returning officer for corruption!

The recount in Ward 14 was just the result of accidental double counting. Although Demong last ~220 votes, it had no impact on the outcome. The recount was called by the City too, not any of the candidates.

What does everyone think of closing this thread down and opening a general Calgary politics or Calgary city council thread? Already seeing political issues going into other threads. Mods?

There's already a sticky thread called "municipal politics" there. Just hasn't been used for a long time. Could just use that thread.
