Scad

Yes, the new SCAD building could be confused with a white-collar Federal prison.
I believe SCAD does a better job at repurposing or restoring existing buildings, but their new construction has always had a rather "lets save a buck" appearance. As we all know, sometimes modern design comes off looking cheap, if it’s not done right – it can be a fine line and you have to have the experience to pull it off.

Just north of Centennial Olympic Park, another hotel to join recent groundswell

Speaking of prisons- the element hotel proposed next to the Hyatt House across from the GA Aquarium looks like a prison as well.

This one is also by LPBC- known for designing the recent surge of dual-brand hotels thrown up across the city; they must have some really low design fees to keep designing these monstrosities.

Development agreement nearly final for 1,000-room Congress Center hotel

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) at a March 21 meeting shared with its development committee the terms of the agreement with Boston, Mass.-based Drew Co. for the roughly 1,000-room hotel, which would rise on a portion of the former Georgia Dome site.

I actually like the Element design. All the others are crap you’d find off exit 74 on 85 driving through South Carolina.

I walked by Opus a couple of days ago... I gotta say, there's no much happening. I know they said they've been blasting but it really looks like they've been doing the absolute minimum.

I hate to say it, but I'm slowly jumping on the "vaporware" side of this, despite being incredulous at first.

Opus site. Is there a way to shrink this monstrosity?

Blasting through the granite there is going to be a slow process if you don't want to kill people on trains or play dominoes with Promenade. Remember the material they are blasting through is taking loads from every direction. Things should speed up when they get the sides of the garage blasted out and dont have to worry about affecting the foundations of the surrounding towers or collapsing a marta line.

Yeah I'm far from an expert in the matter so I'll take your word for it.

Still, they seem to be working very few days. Is that normal?

Yeah, they have to check make sure they aren't causing damage to the surrounding foundations. If Marta is anything like the MTA I would bet a kidney they have a series of checks they make independently to ensure their tunnels are safe before blasting can continue. This is just what real big city construction looks like. If you want it to go up quick and cheap build a parking podium on stilts but if you want below grade parking on a complex site it's going to take time.

Speculating, but they very well could have work-time restrictions on when they can blast. Maybe an agreement with Promenade or something...

Also with the weather, there's been many lost days over the last few months. But it's still slow with that factored in.

When you upload a photo to imgur.com, go to the upper right hand side of the pic and click on the triangle to edit the photo. Photos shouldn't be bigger than 1000 x 1000. Always remember that after you resize a photo you need to select the APPLY button and then the SAVE button. Make sense?

According to the representative from Opus in the February article in Atlanta Magazine, she said it would take several months to blast through all the rock.

Or just add a lower case "L" before the .jpg and it will reduce the size of an imgur URL link.
