River Cats Win Second Triple-A Championship

River Cats Win Second Triple-A Championship
Sacramento Business Journal
Published at 9:17 AM PDT Wednesday, September 17, 2008

The Sacramento River Cats won the Triple-A Championship in Oklahoma City on Tuesday, giving the team back-to-back minor league titles.

The team clinched its fourth Pacific Coast League title in the past six years earlier this week.

On Tuesday, the team defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 4-1.

The Sacramento team, an affiliate of the Oakland A’s, has lead minor league baseball in attendance for each of its nine seasons. Forbes magazine in August named the team the most valuable in minor league baseball, worth $29.8 million.

In 2006 the team’s general manager, Alan Ledford, was named minor league executive of the year.

I watched the whole game. It was great.

Hopefully we'll one day get the A's

Never mind the A's. They can stay in Oakland, Fremont or Hootereville for all I care. We need to find a way to keep the Kings.

Did anyone catch the mention today in the Bee about how the River Cats are near tops in average attendance, yet nobody really knows where they're at or how their season is going? It was kind of an obvious statement, but all I can add is that there's not much better than a day or night out at Raley Field. It's maybe counterintuitive, but I'd rather spend at day watching the Cats than the Kings... and I'm not a big baseball or minor league sports fan at all.

We really have a nice park there. And the given success of the A's farm doesn't hurt either

I agree. If I'm looking to enjoy the outdoors, hang out with some friends and get some cheap entertainment, a River Cats game is a top choice. However, if I want to go to a sporting event to actually watch, then I'd still choose a Kings game. I can't name 3 players on the River Cats.

Also agree but we are talking apples and oranges. I am also not a big baseball fan but I've been to Rivercat games at Raley Field and yeah, it's great place to relax, chill, grab a dog, cold brew and watch a game. Now see if you'd say the same thing watching a 'cats game in Jan when it's 40 degrees out there. If basketball was played from May to October, I doubt they'd fill most arenas. Likewise baseball in an indoor stadium. Just look at Tampa Bay Rays. Division leader most of the season and playing the best baseball they've played in their history, yet they only average 21,000 in a 36,000 seat stadium (26th out of 30 teams in baseball attendance). Why? Partially because they play indoors in a domed stadium in sunny Tampa/St Petersburgh area.

Anyway, Kings over baseball for me.

Well it sure doesn't hurt to try to land the A's as the same time.

Well I wouldn't tell them not to come, but i can't even imagine how difficult it would be to build a billion dollar stadium for the A's when we can't even find a way to build a new arena.

But I understand your point.

Also Sacramento metro certainly has the fan base to support the A's and the Kings but in todays sports world, it's all about the corporate dollars.

In that respect, Sacramento just cannot profitably support two franchises.

We can support 2 teams just fine, its just the leagues refuse to realize it.

But mark my words, within 10 years we will have NBA, MLB and NFL.

I do kind of like the sound of "The Sacramento 49ers."

This is a baseball kind of town: not much rain, plenty sunshine, baseball suits the pace of the city. We used to play a heck of a lot of baseball around these parts. It would be nice if some billionaire brought back the Solons as a major-league team, albeit very unlikely...

If you want to meet Rivercats live they often stay at the Homestead Suites in Natomas when they're in town. There's no bar there and it's a long walk to the nearest liquor store. So they go to bed early and win games.

Wasn't the Rivercats stadium built so one day we could ad on to make it a major league stadium? That sounds a lot easier than trying to build a new arena.

Sounds like an excellent idea to me. I love that location and ballpark. Great views of skyline, riverfront within walking distance, streetcar line coming eventually to mitigate traffic.

Raley Field is one of the best things ever built in Sac in the last decade.

About two years ago I asked if the stadium could be expanded and
this was the email I got back from the Rivercats.

In response to your question regarding Raley Field, it was not built expressly to be easily expanded in the future. The stadium was designed specifically for its current tenant, Triple-A Baseball, and all of the comfort and intimacy that makes Triple-A Baseball so successful. That said, in the unlikely case that we would want to expand the ballpark to accommodate a larger capacity, the stadium would need significant adjustments but likely not need to be demolished and rebuilt from scratch.

I hope this helps. Take care, have a great holiday season and go River Cats!

So it's possible. If the Freemont deal falls through, and we were somehow able to ad on to the Rivercats stadium...that seems like a pretty good deal to get the A's.
