Panel Discussion on built heritage issues: February 5, 2015

Hey all. Full disclosure: This is an event I organized, and I am on the steering committee of Heritage Forward.

Quote:
Heritage Forward! is pleased to announce the first in a series of public events designed to raise awareness of built heritage issues in the city of Edmonton. The first event is a panel discussion highlighting misconceptions surrounding the preservation of built heritage, and will create an open discussion about the ongoing threats and factors involved in heritage preservation. The event is free to attend, and open to all interested citizens.

The event takes place on Thursday, February 5, 2015 from 6:30-8pm in the Jefferson Room at the Prince of Wales Armouries Heritage Centre, 10440 – 108th Avenue. The panelists include Chris Dulaba (founder, Callidus Development), Shirley Lowe (built heritage advocate), David Percy (Old Glenora Conservation Society), and Mike Swick (Director, Hanscomb Limited). The event will be hosted by Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail, Edmonton’s Historian Laureate.

About Heritage Forward!
Heritage Forward! is a community driven group created to raise awareness and implement actions to ensure that Edmonton’s heritage buildings are valued and preserved in our community. Heritage Forward! strives to broaden conversations about the state of historical resources and urban heritage character in our evolving city by bringing together diverse interests and voices.
A lot of people seem unsure or hold misconceptions about the role of the City of Edmonton, the Edmonton Historic Board, developers, and other concerned parties when it comes to issues of built heritage preservation.

This, our first in a series of planned events, is designed to dispel some misconceptions and speak to questions such as (but not limited to):

Why are heritage buildings so often lost?
What programs are in place to help preserve them?
Are these programs effective?
What is the purpose of municipal heritage designation? Provincial heritage designation?
Can heritage preservation be financially viable?
Is facadism 'good enough'?

The format of the event is a moderated panel discussion followed by Q&A from the audience.

The broader mandate of Heritage Forward is to create a meaningful dialog between the City of Edmonton, developers, heritage advocates, and the general public, with the ultimate goal of preserving as much built heritage in Edmonton as possible.

If you wish to follow our activities we are on twitter: @HeritageForward

I do hope to see some of you there.

Hello all,

After the success of the first event we have decided to move forward quickly on our second. The format will be similar, and will involve a panel discussion. This time the topic will be on infill developments in mature neighborhoods, and the City of Edmonton's Mature Housing Overlay (MHO) policies.

Once again the panel will be hosted/moderated by Edmonton's Historian Laureate Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail, and panelists include Ken Cantor, commercial manager for Qualico Developments, Bev Zubot of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues, and conservation architect David Murray. One or two more panelists are to be confirmed.

The event will take place in the main auditorium at the historic 1930 Central Masonic Hall in downtown Edmonton on Monday March 2. Come down and catch a glimpse of one of Edmonton's heritage treasures!

Coffee/tea and light refreshments will be available, and there will be a cash bar serving beer and wine.

Once again we ask that you register for your free tickets at Eventbrite:
