I'm wondering what is going to happen to that mall. They did a massive renovation when Zellers folded and added the usual dreck (Dollarama, Ardene). The new seniors complex that is currently under construction and replacing the the old Canadian Tire might give it a jolt of life. They are building a Super C on the ground floor, replacing the current one on the other side of the mall.

For the towels we have a part hippie/part homeless guy driving a converted 60s school bus who parks in the Husky gas station parking lot selling these things haha!

Speaking of dead malls New Jersey’s aborted Xanadu mall is being brought back from the dead by the family that built West Edmonton Mall. Who wouldn’t want to take time from all the sight seeing in NYC to visit a tacky Dubai meets Edmonton megamall that Chris Christie called the ugliest building in the world?

We'll see. Ghermezians have been trying to get this completed for 5 years now. It's 3 years behind schedule. No one is buying into their vision.

Yeah, I sometimes go to the Walmart at Sheridan Mall. It's kind of the immigrant working class mall I had in mind: 1980s decor, stores that sell hip hop wear, discount baby clothing and samosas, and elderly Pakistanis and Jamaicans hanging out in the food court.

Dollarama is going in a mall that has The Bay. This is filling in part of the former Target space; there's still the Sears space to deal with. If Dollarama can locate in that mall, I wouldn't be surprised to see Giant Tiger show up next.

Kingston is going to have about 5 Dollarama locations per 100,000 residents once this one opens.

Also interesting is that Indigo is moving into the mall. They have a big box Chapters store a short drive to the east, which I wouldn't be surprised to see close. Not every day in Canadian retail you see a big box retailer move to a traditional mall.

Assuming the plan is to close the nearby Chapters store, it depends on the square footage of the new store. The nearby Chapters is the standard size of most Chapters stores.

Chapters are typically smaller than Indigos, so chances are the new location is larger.

And $8 100g Godiva chocolate bars. And Heather's 'pix'.
I have little use for it. there are hardly any books for sale.

Indigo is phasing out the chapters brand and converting chapters to indigo stores.

this was and is still referred to as chapters on south granville in Vancouver, its been changed to indigo for a while now

Interesting report to the city of Edmonton regarding densification around transit stations vs. existing shopping centers. To-date Edmonton hasn't really had much luck with transit oriented development, and it turns out that densifying areas around existing shopping centers may be much more appealing to people than simply living on an LRT line

Timmins now has 4 Dollarama locations for a population of 42,000. I'm not happy about that.

No doubt about that. We only have a Coles store in Timmins (owned by Indigo) at the mall and even it is selling more and more of the things you mentioned.

Haha, I thought Thunder Bay was excessive. We have at least 6, but I feel like I'm missing one. We even have one downtown now, in a former Shoppers Drug Mart.

People here want Giant Tiger so bad it's hilarious. The goals of people in small cities are really depressing.

Dollarama should be shittier than Giant Tiger but somehow it isn't. With Biway and the Bargain! Store gone (and with Fields going), Giant Tiger is to me a really shitty, depressing place.

Dollarama is at least relatively clean and organized. It is what it is: a great place to pick up 79cent chocolate bars, and some party supplies or cheap stocking stuffers.

Giant Tiger is so fucking hit-or-miss (mostly miss). I don't get the concept. Seems to sell a mixture of Grade D food and distressed merchandise.
