Well, Clean up for re-construction has started:
http://fortmc.ca/fort-mcmurray-news/...ll-t17154.html

Work is still being done on both Abasand and Beacon Hill but the municipality is hoping for a return of residents in the areas soon.

Work is being done for all properties in re-occupation in Phase One. The homes in these two areas are being divided into two Phases, the homes in Phase One being the ones that are farther away from the debris field.

Right now the hope is that home owners whose properties fall under the first Phase can return home five to seven days after the Chief Medical Officer of Health signs off on the plan. As of right now there’s no timetable for when and if the sign off would happen.

The municipality has seen significant progress of the flushing and cleaning all the water appliances in these homes. As it sits right now this is almost fully completed with the next step beingbacteria testing. This will confirm the potability of water in both of these areas.

732 Demolition Permit applications have been filed with 419 being issued. 310 of these permits were received by the municipality over the August long weekend. There have also been 51 post-demolition inspections.

Now this is all part of the Green Homes Plan which will detail all residents what to expect up too and upon their re-entry. Information centres will be set up in both Abasand and Beacon Hill to provide information as well as support.

While the municipality and the Government of Alberta continue to try and re-occupy the two areas they are continuing to investigate the best measures for re-entry of Waterways. Right now safety is the big priority with more studying needed to learn of possible risks of rebuilding in the Waterways flood plain.

The municipality will be sending out another update on all three areas one week from today on August 11th. They will be giving out weekly updates.

Rural coalition asking for a provincial review of RMWB amalgamation

This could spell the end of the RMWB:

Let's be clear. It is the request of a review of a decision on behalf of a rural coalition. It is far, far, far from something that "could spell the end of the RMWB".

Most optimistic projection for the coalition? They get a larger guaranteed percentage of revenue share at some point in the future.

Agreed, but less ugly than the original and way less ugly than the half built skeleton that sat there for 10 years!

Hello everybody! Out of towner here, but I was wondering how Fort McMurray was doing after the fire? I wish the media would do more follow-up on communities effected by disaster like this, but all that tends to make national headlines is the disaster itself. I read a CBC article from not too long ago that mentioned that "the beast" burned through the winter which is fascinating.

Also, I know Fort McMurray was forecast to grow to 200,000 or something like that by 2030, is that still the case after the fire and downturn in oil prices?
It seems like a special place, I get the impression that its probably the "most Canadian" city in Canada, considering that it probably has the highest proportion of Canadians from all provinces and territories of any Canadian city.

Centron begins construction on Eagle Ridge shopping centre, theatre

Conceptual art provided by Centron Group of The Commons at Eagle Ridge, a 250,000 square-foot shopping centre with a multiplex.

Construction is expected to begin on a new shopping complex in Fort McMurray, which will include a long-awaited movie theatre.

Development of the first phase of a 250,000 square-foot retail centre called The Commons at Eagle Ridge has begun, according to a press release from the Calgary-based Centron Group. The shopping centre will include a multiplex operated by Landmark Cinemas, which is expected to be complete by fall 2018, said Bill Walker, chief operating officer at Landmark Cinemas Canada.

“It’s good to make it official and the shovels are in the ground, so it’s finally going to happen,” Walker said.

The development will have space for restaurants, retail outlets and other services, the release read.

The eight-screen, 37,000 square-foot theatre will be the main centrepiece of the shopping centre. The company describes its 25-foot screens as “wall-to-wall,” offering the latest in digital projection and sound.

Auditoriums in a full-stadium configuration will feature more than 900 powered reclined seating. All seating will be available on a complimentary reserved seating basis and tickets will be available in advance.

“The real feature honestly is the seating experinece and the comfort it creates,” he said. “We just know that the community is going to be quite impressed with the difference in the movie theatre experience once we get open.”

Walker also said the reserved seating typically leads to people booking tickets further ahead, eliminating any stressful rush for first-come, first-served seating.

When the plans for the theatre were announced in April 2016, it was to have 10 screens and enough seating for 1,100 people. Walker said the changes were less about “scaling down” and more of an adaptation to fit the site plan better.

Despite some bumpy months over the past few years, business at the current downtown theatre is now as good as it was pre-fire, and even pre-oil crash, he said. This is likely because the theatre’s customers are largely long-term residents, instead of transient oil camp workers.

Jeeze Fort McMurray is booming, hopefully, the city will be able to diversify the local economy before the oil boom becomes a permanent bust.

Nice to see activity on this site yesterday. Was in town on a couple of projects and have to say it was nice to see all the activity. Had not been up since Dec and was impressed by the progress on the rebuild.

Looks like you were there on Friday as well.

The Heliport at the Hospital has started.

The hospital re-clad is coming along and will look spectacular when done.

The long delayed seniors care facility was finally moving forward.

This is roughly across from the hospital.
