Google Fiber Comes To Salt Lake City

Hey Salt Lake City,
Have you seen us around town lately? We’re the ones with hard hats and dirt stains on our clothes.

Over the last few months, our team has been drawing up blueprints for our new fiber network in Salt Lake City. But that was just the start.

We're doing some heavy lifting – literally – to bring Google Fiber to communities throughout Salt Lake City. There are crews working on the streets with boom trucks, tunnel boring machines, and rolls of cables as we form the foundation of our network.

We'll be sure to let you know if we're going to be doing construction near your home — but here's a sneak peek at what we're up to.

There’s a lot to do, but we’re working hard to make sure we get it right. If you haven’t already, you can follow us on Google+, Facebook, or Twitter to hear more about what’s next.

See you around town,
The Salt Lake City Google Fiber team

This bright orange roll of conduit covers our fiber to protect it from the elements as we lay it underground. We’ll be installing enough fiber in Salt Lake City to run from here to Canada.

Safety is always a priority for us. By using a vacuum and potholing equipment to locate existing utilities, we can work around important infrastructure as we lay our fiber.

We use a lot of different types of equipment to lay fiber. Here we’re preparing the horizontal directional drill to place conduit underground.

Encore Apartments - Under Construction http://www.slcitynews.com/in-picture...ing-at-encore/

By Isaac Riddle - For more information and pictures on this and other projects go to: THE SLC BLOG http://www.theslcblog.org/author/iriddle81gmail-com/

...The seven-story, 189-unit apartment building on the 400 East block of 400 South is framed out and exterior work has begun...

The project has some good points, it avoids being a large box and its 2nd floor courtyard area faces 400 South instead of being hidden back behind the apartments. The project has zero setback on Denver Street and 500 East, but it lacks real street engagement on 400 South. The 400 South facing side of the development has what appears to be a setback of around 10 feet with landscaping that will separate Encore from the sidewalk.

According to Corey Johnson with Wasatch Advantage Group, the developers of the project, ground-floor retail wasn’t economically feasible for the Encore because mixed-use projects are more expensive and difficult to get financed. Johnson stated that architects moved the leasing office and gym to the street level to balance the lack of retail...

$430M Provo hospital upgrade kicks off to healthy start

Scott Roberson, director of operations of the Intermountain Medical Group, operates an excavator along with other dignitaries at the groundbreaking ceremony at the Utah
Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo on Wednesday, June 17, 2015. The $430 million hospital replacement project includes a 12-story patient tower that replaces the existing seven-story
structure and a nine-story outpatient building that will provide space for Intermountain physician clinics as well as several critical outpatient hospital services.

PROVO — Instead of gold shovels, Intermountain Healthcare officials operated several small excavators on Wednesday to commemorate the start of a major Utah Valley Regional Medical
Center hospital replacement project.

"I'm just amazed at the opportunity for transformation that we see here in front of us and the impact that this will have, not just on Provo but our entire valley," said Provo Mayor John Curtis.

The new building is a $430 million investment designed to serve the community for decades and will be one of the biggest health care projects in the valley, according to Steve Smoot, CEO
of the medical center...

...The renovated campus will include a 12-story patient tower with large rooms displaying the nature of Utah Valley, and will replace the current seven-story tower that was built in the 1970s.

Other features include structural designs that provide spaces where tasks not involving patients directly can be completed without disrupting the guests during their stay.

A nine-story outpatient services structure will also be built as part of the effort to focus on preventive health.

The hospital's campus will also display a pond and waterfall for visitors to enjoy, and the grounds will feature water efficient landscaping.

"It will serve as an icon for health care in the state and country — but more importantly, right here in our community," said Smoot...

...Internally, the hospital will focus on coordination between doctors by using new technological systems, in addition to emphasizing the importance of people being healthy before they become ill and how this will prevent emergency care later.

"Historically, physicians have focused on taking care of people who are sick. Well, that needs to change," said Dr. Linda Leckman, CEO of Intermountain Medical Group. "Physicians need to take a role in leadership in that change."

The new campus will include a gym and several other services that will help patients and families learn how to live a healthier life as part of the challenge to create a healthier community.

The completion of the hospital replacement project is scheduled for the fall of 2018.

Cottonwood Heights Plans Development District

By Tom Haraldsen

http://www.cottonwoodholladayjournal...pment-district

The future belongs to those who prepare for it, and officials in Cottonwood Heights City are working to stay ahead of the curve. In this case, it involves both curves and straightaways—along Fort Union Blvd.

A Planned Development District that city staff is now studying is intended to encourage mixed used development along the roadway, from 1300 East and Union Park eastward to the gravel pit on Wasatch Blvd.

“This has been on the city’s radar for the entire 10 years since its incorporation,” said Brian Berndt, community and economic development director. “The Fort Union corridor has some unique connection qualities that are underutilized, and we want to make sure we can offer options to both current property owners and those who look at new and redevelopment in the area.”

During his presentation at a city council work session, Berndt illustrated the potential for retail and residential development along Fort Union, as well as addressing the sales revenue leakage Cottonwood Heights is losing from residents’ spending.

“We’ve identified that more than two-thirds of the revenue we could be getting is leaving the city,” he said. “Hospitality dollars alone—lodging and food and beverage—are being spent in neighboring cities because our residents can’t find what they are looking for here.”

Fort Union’s connectability is multi-faceted. To the north, I-215 intersects at both 1300 and 2000 East, as well as at 3000 East, where motorists can turn to go up to Wasatch Blvd. On the boulevard itself, vehicles can travel to and from the canyons.

“So we’re looking at a type of zoning classification that could give property owners some options for development,” Berndt said. “By the city creating this master plan for the PDD, we can go out and seek funding for different grants, to help with highway, bike and pedestrian improvements.”

It’s a team approach, Berndt said, working with developers to help with established properties that are 40 or 50 years old and thus underutilized, as well as finding new businesses to come into the city.

“The code we’re proposing gives those owners and developers significant options,” he said.

The PDD divides the boulevard into three corridors—west, central and east. Though the development plan would be rolled out over the next 10 years, some of the changes could be much more immediate.

The west corridor, near existing retail businesses in the 1300 East and Union Park area, could see increased density of retail development, condensed parking areas that would reduce the amount of asphalt, improved visibility and signage, added entertainment options such as dining and plaza areas. Ultimately it is designed to recapture lost sales tax leakage through addition of new businesses.

“We want to create a place for people to shop and linger,” Berndt said.

Development in the central corridor, along Highland Drive and 2300 East, would be more recreation-related, with lunchtime eateries and a gathering place for community events. The plan calls for increased allowable housing densities and building heights (five to six stories), rental units at commercial nodes with townhouse development, increased walkability and bringing businesses out closer to the street.

“We can recapture lost sales tax leakage in smaller-scale businesses,” Berndt said.

The east corridor would ideally create a vibrant gateway to Fort Union, and could include splash pads, an ice skating rink, warming stations for bikers and walkers, food vendors and mobiles, interactive sports, a clock tower and unique, one-of-a-kind restaurants in a cluster area. Shuttle service to and from the canyons and from existing and future hotels would lend itself to development of this area. Class A office space in the area, which currently enjoys a 94 percent occupancy rate, would be increased. The Wasatch Front Regional Council estimates that 11,000 new jobs will be created in the city over the next 25 years.

The best states in America for working dads

#9 Utah

To rank the states, WalletHub looked at many of the same things they tracked for women, namely: Social and economic well-being, the state's record on healthcare and local laws that facilitate work-life balance, including child care.

WalletHub took each category and ranked each state accordingly. They then aggregated the overall score for each state.

Here, we've listed the 25 best performing states in WalletHub's rankings, from worst to best.

Salt Lake City residents prefer parks and trails over golf, study says

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...tudy-says.html

The Salt Lake City Council has sent recommendations to Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker to close the Glendale Golf Course in Salt Lake City. Photograph taken on Friday, April 17, 2015. (Laura Seitz, Deseret News)

SALT LAKE CITY — Poll results are in, and they're reaffirming city leaders' decision to close at least two city golf courses: Glendale and Jordan River Par-3.

Two surveys contracted by Mayor Ralph Becker's office indicate that Salt Lake City residents want open space, parks and trails, but aren't as interested in golf.

City Councilman Kyle LaMalfa, whose district encompasses Glendale, said the results illustrate how Salt Lake residents' recreation preferences are changing.

"I think Salt Lake, as progressive as we are about many things, is way behind the times for trails," LaMalfa said. "Cities like Logan, Ogden, Provo, Orem and St. George are way ahead...

Special thanks going out to our Architects/IBI, who I believe have done an amazing job at coming up with an original and beautiful design for AUC!

We are very close to having all of the pieces to get AUC underway ...

Downtown Update - 111 Tower - Utah Performing Arts Center and Regent Street - Under Construction

Utah Performing Arts Center and 111 Tower

...Lead architects, Cesar Pelli and Mitch Hirsch explained in detail the design, which will include a three-balcony, opera house configuration for the seating area and a large,
four-story “Winter Garden” lobby with glass exterior facing Main St. They also touted the fact that the theater building will have no “back”. With pedestrian passages from Main St. to Regent St,
a public plaza in front of the truck loading docks, and a rejuvenated Regent St full of nightlife and daytime action, the NPAC will be a driving force in activating downtown, on the blocks to
the immediate south of the spectacular new City Creek Center...

City unveils new plans for downtown Regent Street by 111 Tower & EPAC Theater

Jason Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...y-theater.html

Becker and other city administrators unveiled the new schematic design plans for the Regent Street block located on the east side of the new Eccles Theater, between 100 South and
200 South.

Artist rendering of view from 200 South of proposed Regent Street redevelopment project aimed at making the mid-block connector between City Creek and
the Gallivan Center a place to “gather, discover and connect.” (Salt Lake City)

The project would include retail and dining establishments, a public plaza, along with custom landscape architecture throughout the common areas. While the street would still be
accessed by motor vehicle traffic, the area would also be accessible to pedestrians and could be converted to pedestrian-only access for events such as concerts, Becker explained.

“Since I took office, a primary object is to make downtown a gathering place for the region — and have it be a true welcoming environment for people seeking all kinds of activities that you
can really only find in the downtown area,” he said. “We see this as part of what we are doing to make this the 'cultural core' of the region.”...

...The redevelopment project is aimed at attracting more people into downtown and generating a distinctive experience that can’t happen anywhere else, said STRUCK agency's Brent Watts,
who is part of the creative design team for the Regent Street project.

“We want to create a 'branded' experience,” he said, adding that besides gathering and dining, the corridor will include local artists and local shops.

“We want sizeable, small-scale retail shops on the street,” Watts said. “That’s important.”...

Liberty Crest Apartments

Steady progress at Liberty Crest @ http://www.slcitynews.com/in-picture...liberty-crest/

Construction is well underway on the Liberty Crest Apartments-a seven-story, 177 unit residential project at 150 South 200 East in Downtown Salt Lake. The 234-stall parking structure has surpassed ground level, indicating that framing for the residential units should begin shortly. The project will consists of mostly market-rate one and two bedroom units with around 20 penthouses available on the seventh-floor and five ground-level townhomes fronting 200 East.

The project is within a block of the City Creek Center, Harmons Grocery Store and popular bars on 200 South: Bar-X, Beer Bar and Johnny’s On Second. Planned amenities include: a lobby with a mezzanine, fitness room, a ground-level internet cafe with both indoor and outdoor seating areas and a rooftop terrace for events and socializing.

Construction is expected to be completed Spring 2016.

While I guess it's just a place holder awaiting the future tower, the garden greenery is actually quite nice on that corner. Love that bike sharing station too!
