Wilmington, NC is the largest city on North Carolina's coast, but it isn't too big - it is the 8th largest city in the state. Also included are photos of nearby Wrightsville Beach. Population is 109,922 city and 263,429 metro. The downtown skyline isn't too big but is home to a number of restaurants, pubs, and music venues. It is often compared to Asheville's downtown but it isn't quite on the same level. Since I last visited in 2006 there have been a number of new developments downtown but I didn't have a chance to photograph them.
One of the largest and most modern buildings in downtown:
I took the skyline photos from the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial Park across the Cape Fear River from downtown:
Wilmington is the home port of the US Coast Guard Cutter Diligence.
Here are some photos of Wrightsville Beach, which is about a 15 minute drive east of downtown Wilmington:
Thanks for the pics. I haven't been through Wilmington since the 1980s. It's one of those places that are on my list to visit but keeps getting pushed back.
Ugh! What an ugly new waterfront building (with the little central clock, behind the Coast Guard ship).
I don't recall it being there ~5 years ago -- I was impressed by the general built form homogeneity and lack of visible/prominent "commie blocks" during my short and superficial visit. (I have to admit I spent most of my limited time on the beaches and visiting the museum/site at Fort Fisher.)
Nice pics of the street level and heritage buildings... Lovely!
That is one lazy, laid back, looking seaport and with a beach town near by. Sounds and looks great too me and probably others for my golden years...
Downtown is a bit lazy during the day but it definitely has a solid club/music scene in the evenings and at night time....don't let it fool you. But the beaches are quaint and tasteful unlike that contaminated cesspool 60+ miles south (Myrtle Beach)...lol, I enjoy MB as well
Nice pics, Wilmington has a great core and known as Hollywood East. Tons of movies, TV series, etc filmed there including Matlock (Andy Griffith) which shows that very courthouse during the opening theme. It's not too uncommon to bump into some of Hollywoods finest meandering about town.
