They were probably checking the existing condition of the foundation work already set in place.

That would be my best guess.

I believe so....they found whatever they were looking for because they abruptly stopped...seven guys looked down in the hole......then filled in the holes and haven't been back since.

They were probably checking on the foundation already in place, to see if they needed to re-drill the foundation or just attach to the foundation already in place. We should see activity shortly either way. I doubt they'll dig the foundation out if it is obsolete. They'll prob just drive in piles right next to the current foundation or if the foundation is okay they'll just use that.

I don't think there's an existing foundation there anymore - the rectangular pit that used to be there before it was back filled with dirt had no foundations, as far as I know, just a perimeter retaining wall consisting of soldier piles and lagging.

My guess is that the original Penn Center Inn foundations were probably removed when it was demolished in c.1989 or so, because the empty pit was very deep. The Penn Center Inn had an above-grade parking pedestal, so AFAIK there was no deep underground parking built over even deeper set of preserved foundations.

My guess is that maybe they were just confirming the depth of the dirt infill.

Very possible. Someone mentioned that there could have been foundation put in place when they were planning to make a twin of the IBX building. Either way work should start shortly.

So how tall will it be now? I'm less concerned about height and I'm happy to get rid of this eyesore of a lot and add some 24 hour activity and retail to this corner.

I agree.....That has been one of the most frustrating lots around......I've worked in CC for 14 years and right next to that lot for 10....I need something productive there besides dirt, mud, weeds, trash, graffiti & pop-up gardens.

I am happy that they finnally building something. It will add the the cavern of Market street but I was really wishing it to be about 580 ft tall. That would go more with the skyine. Smaller then Blue Cross and taller then Commerce square..

If they are still messing around with their design they should consider adding some floors now that they know the comcast tower is going to be around the corner. I think a reinvented logan square and the proximity to ritten house is actually going to make this a pretty good location now.

It looked today like there was some digging that occurred on site.

Doubling the number of floors would be awesome.

We can only hope.

Aside: Is it possible to update the image that shows up in the thread title? It's still showing the old one before the redesign and the building looks completely different now.
