Concur to a certain extent. Would have rocked for conventions and weekend getaways... but great to have back in some form or another.

The potential for CKUA to use the bar as a performance venue is really exciting.

Checked out 'Common' (109st/99ave) on Thursday. They did a great reno with the space, much more inviting and bright during the day, hip once the sun goes down. Prices are pretty much bang on with appys in the $5-15 range and mains in the $10-20 range. Staff are friendly and attentive. They need a few more seats here and there and still find their feet a little, but overall a great addition to the downtown scene. Congrats guys and gals.

^ good news. I love a bar where there are numerous choices of my favorite style of beer. Can't wait to check this one out.

On an unrelated note, the current Avenue magazine has a spread showcasing three different Afro-Indian restaurants on Alberta Avenue. If that type of food is your thing, take a trip uptown and check out some of the great new restaurants springing up in the Ave.

Also in Ave. Magazine was an article on Vancouverites returning to Edmonton because of the lack of affordability on the coast. Seems more & more are ready to gve up a little of the "lifestyle" Vancouver offers in exchange for a better 'life" here. Interesting read.

Apparently 'Sanku 2' on Jasper/103st will become 'Phat Noodle'.

I'd kill for some good pho downtown downtown... although King Noodle on 97 is worth the trip.

Falafel 101 is opening on 101 St next door to Swedish Jewelers. Temporary signage looks like it was written by a kindergarten child.

Yellowhead Brewery - business is booming

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmont...s-booming.html

Quote:
Beer produced by an Edmonton microbrewery has become such a hit that the company is improvising to keep up.

The Yellowhead Brewery Company has been in business for less than two years and business is booming, success the company attributes to a heightened interest in locally-produced food.

"We had to figure out how we're going to deal with this demand, otherwise we may run out of beer," said brewmaster Scott Harris.

"So we decided to scale back the bottle side of things and focus on the draft side of the business right now."

The company was bottling 1,000 brews a day at its site in downtown Edmonton until a part broke on a machine. The company will shift most of its production to draft until repairs can be made.

Knock on wood....

Glad to see they are doing well though. It is a shame Edmontonians aren't big supporters of local micro brews (compared to the way things are in Ontario [part of which is provincial liquor regulations limiting distribution], and the sheer amount of micro breweries), but it is good to see things changing.

Another reason why you see more micro brews in Ontario is that the government provides a subsidy to the smaller brewers. I believe they are cutting this subsidy with the latest budget cuts. There was a news story on this a few weeks ago.
