That's because the columns presently visible are going to be covered by concrete in the core. The exterior columns should be much thicker equivalent to the other towers.

The location of this tower — right next to Grand Central and the Chrysler, is sure to make this a permanent NYC icon.

It's somewhat analog nature to the ESB, but with a twist will surely make it a compeer with the legends. It defines the peaks, the crows, the intimidating nature that is gotham. Surely will be a staple in the skyline silhouette as dusk settles.

One Vanderbilt Gets Its Crane, Midtown East

Quote:
One Vanderbilt has been in the makings for quite some time, and while it took several years and a special pre-Midtown East rezoning approval for work to begin at the site, things are now chugging along with gusto. Steelwork for the soon-to-be 1,401-foot-tall tower breached street level about a month ago, and now, the future supertall’s crane has arrived on-site, heralding imminent verticality.

SL Green is behind the first true behemoth of Midtown East, and Kohn Pedersen Fox is designing the tower, which will comprise 1.6 million square feet. While building permits indicate the project will rise 67 floors, the official count per the PR team is only 58 floors.

The layout of the building will be somewhat atypical for supertalls, at least on the upper floors. The top three levels will feature retail space alongside an observation deck, the first of its kind in the neighborhood. The base of the structure will have 200,000 square feet of retail space, to be occupied by a TD Bank.

While the rest of Midtown East is likely to host a new forest of even taller towers in the coming decades, One Vanderbilt benefitted from SL Green’s commitments to improving the neighborhood’s transit infrastructure, in conjunction with the impending opening of East Side Access. There will be a 4,000-square-foot transit hall linked to the sub-cellar of the tower, which will also integrate into the imminently-improved lower levels of Grand Central Station.

One of two tower cranes is now in place at the #OneVanderbilt site. These rising cranes, which lift thousands of tons steel and concrete, will eventually be some of the tallest in the city. Big hat tip to our Local 14 Operating Engineers.

One Vanderbilt gets first of two cranes en route to 1,401-foot apex
One crane will lift steel and the other will lift concrete

BY ZOE ROSENBERG
August 18, 2017

Quote:
The first of two cranes that will help build the city’s second tallest office tower, One Vanderbilt, has arrived on site in Midtown East. Construction on the 1,401-foot office tower officially started back in October, with a foundation following in February. The first steel column for the structure was installed in late June.

The crane that arrived on site this week is one of two that will rise with the building. As was done with One World Trade Center, the cranes will affix to the building and be moved up every four floors that are established. One of the cranes will be designated to lift steel and the other will lift concrete.

I can't get over the location of this one. It's just bound to be so iconic. There's nothing like seeing Grand Central and the Chrysler right next to it in the construction photos. I can't wait till this thing really starts rising.

Window-gazing at the mock up of the #OneVanderbilt facade. Evoking the iconic terra-cotta tiles used in @grandcentralnyc, diagonal spandrels of terra-cotta will be placed throughout the skyscraper's curtain wall with a concentration at the base, designed to interplay with the Beaux Arts landmark.
