Jefferson Parish Bicycle Plan

Where cars rule, Jefferson Parish unveils a plan to encourage bicyclists

The wide shopping boulevards lined with parking lots and restaurant drive-throughs. The broad drainage canals that discourage pedestrians crossing. The 10-lane superhighway that roars through it all.

These are evidence that Jefferson Parish, a textbook suburb where cars are king and free parking is a shopper's birthright, grew up in the age of the automobile.

That age might be dying, however. If it does, its death certificate might well be the Jefferson Parish Master Bicycle Plan, a 92-page roadmap of ways to transform Metairie, Marrero and points in between into a haven of dedicated bike lanes and greenways, a place where motorists learn to steer clear of cyclists and the newest residents will be born within reach of a helmet...

Habitat Proposes $12 Million Bywater Development

http://canalstreetbeat.com/habitat-p...r-development/

Great Article(video segment on largest cruise ship...also mentions Bywater terminal Starts construction this year and will allow a huge increase in capacity)

http://www.wwltv.com/video?id=255231441&sec=554637

Another article says the new terminal will be built to handle ships between 4,000 and 6,000 passengers.

Dorignac's Announces Upgrades, but '60s Signs Here to Stay

Dorignac's, the beloved Metairie grocery store that's like a step back in time, is getting a makeover but the oh-so-iconic retro signs won't be going anywhere. According to The Times-Pic, the number of signs, which date back to the store's 1963 opening on Veterans Boulevard, don't follow the current council rules but an exception was made for the supermarket with quasi-landmark status. The squat brick building will get wider windows, new lighting, and parking lot landscaping as part of its renovation, which should run between $1.5 to $3 million and kick off this summer.

Chic Throwback The Franklin Coming Soon To Marigny

Chef Front of house guy Jason Baas, a Lilette, Cafe Atchafalaya and Bacchanal alum, is opening The Franklin this Spring at Dauphine and Franklin (caddy corner to Lost Love Lounge, y'all). The building, owned by Patrick Finney and Michael Wilkinson (you may recall they also own former Bridge Lounge/upcoming Barrel Proof), has actually been fixed up for a few months, as Curbed NOLA first reported back in January, with construction mainly happening on the space during 2013 from Bockman + Forbes Design, who also did ritzy renovations at Broussard's Restaurant, Little Gem Saloon and Bouligny Tavern. Finney tells Eater that the space has a sort of chic 1930's vibe (do stay tuned for juicy photo coverage).

But don't expect it to be all snooty butt up in there, because Baas tells Todd A. Price that "when you see the place, it looks like New York. But it's not. We're opening a New Orleans restaurant."

National clothing brands on Magazine St?

I recently read an opnion piece on TheLens.com about whether Magazine Street's character is being threatened by national chains. It is a very interesting read, and should be of our concern. It mentioned that there are rumors of two national clothing retailers eyeing Magazine for new locations. Now I'm curious; anyone know who they may be?

You can find the Lens story here: http://thelensnola.org/2014/04/18/ch...-huge-success/

I see this as a positive for the city. The stores on Magazine can't afford the rents that national chains can, but in many cases they're not in direct competition. All that will happen is that some indie businesses get displaced to other neighborhoods and startups never even consider Magazine. Then those indie businesses can help revitalize St. Claude, Broad, or OC Haley.

There's no question, but if New Orleanians can have some options to pay less for clothes at a chain, that makes the locals less poor. We're trying to reduce the income disparity not exacerbate it (like you see here or NY or SF).

Here ya go...

Quote:
The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority is moving ahead with plans for a central terminal on the neutral ground of Canal Boulevard. The project would consolidate a cluster of nearby transit stops that have long caused headaches for drivers and pedestrians.
Streetcar passengers run across City Park Avenue to catch a bus on Canal Boulevard. The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority has submitted new plans to extend the Canal streetcar line to the bus stop and build a new terminal structure. (Photo by Ashley Merlin)
Streetcar passengers run across City Park Avenue to catch a bus on Canal Boulevard. The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority has submitted new plans to extend the Canal streetcar line to the bus stop and build a new terminal structure. (Photo by Ashley Merlin)
The plans call for moving all public transit stops near the end of the streetcar line to one location, the neutral ground near The Bulldog bar.
Tracks will be extended to turn right onto City Park Avenue and left onto Canal Boulevard, where streetcars can load and unload passengers next to a bus stop.
Officials said the plan will create a safer environment than the current layout, where six bus or streetcar stops are located within the two blocks where Canal Street intersects with City Park Avenue and becomes Canal Boulevard.
Greenwood Cemetery creates a situation where traffic is staggered with a signal light, a stop sign and a yield for motorists heading downtown. The lack of crosswalks and pedestrian signals raises the risk for confusion as transit riders try to make transfers.
“It’s one of these projects that’s definitely needed, especially from a safety standpoint,” RTA chief executive Justin Augustine said.
The RTA estimates that 650,000 passengers used the transfer point in 2013, an average of 1,781 a day.
Its original plans for a terminal faced objections from residents who live nearby.
The Lakeview Civic Improvement Association cited concerns with a proposal for a large, enclosed complex that would have completely covered the neutral ground and included bathrooms and vending machines. Residents worried would it would attract loiterers.
The new design includes a canopy structure with seating underneath. It does not include enclosed public buildings, vending machines or bathrooms, said City Councilwoman Susan Guidry, who represents the district and has seen preliminary designs.
The new configuration also covers less space on the neutral ground, another point of contention among opponents.
The RTA submitted the design to the Federal Transportation Administration for review but declined to release a copy to CityBusiness pending approval from Washington.
The project will be funded with federal money. Its cost is still being determined, Augustine said.
The RTA’s original plans were estimated to cost less than $10 million.
RTA spokeswoman Patrice Bell Mercadel said once the authority receives feedback from the federal government, it will schedule another meeting to share the plans with the public.
“Additional information and documents will be available at that time,” Mercadel said.
Objections from neighbors who halted the original plan seem to have been resolved. According to Guidry and Augustine, there is now a consensus between the RTA and Lakeview Civic Improvement Association on the new design.
Calls to LCIA President Ann LeBlanc weren’t returned. Guidry, who is in close contact with the group, said its members support the plans.
“This is a badly needed reworking of the public controls,” she said.
Augustine said he met with LCIA representatives and left with the impression that they approve the new design.
Guidry said the RTA will address safer pedestrian crossings with help from the city, he said.
The authority has started requesting bids for work on the project and construction is scheduled to begin in 2015, Augustine said.
An environmental impact study, necessary for the release of federal money, is nearly complete, he added.

Hi everyone,

Been a while since I last posted but rest assured I've continued to read the board and appreciate all of your fantastic input/development news.

Good news to report -- I landed a great new job in NOLA and I'll be moving back down in a couple weeks. I've been frustrated with the available housing in the Quarter and Marigny (my preferred destinations) though. Especially since I have a cat and that disqualifies me from a few of the decent places I planned to look at upon my arrival.

I did see openings at the DH Holmes building in the Quarter. Does anyone have any insight into that building? It seems almost too perfect with price/location/relatively cheap parking...

Also, if anyone can point me in the direction of a good realtor for rentals in the FQ/Marigny, please let me know. My price range is $1200-$1650/mo.

Cheers and happy Easter

I can only imagine how much worse traffic will get at that intersection, but I agree that it is sorely needed. Couldn't they place bathrooms that were accessible only to those who had paid a fare or had a card? I get the concern with loitering but I've always wondered why this city doesn't have any public bathrooms other than in the parks. (I know RTA hasn't actually caught up to that kind of technology- or have they?)

Thanks, Eightball!

Interesting compromise between residents and the RTA. I used the stops over a period of years, as well as driving through the turns. Something needed to be done.

I really wish these were socially acceptable. Obviously they don't smell great but it discourages people from doing their business in other places (like alleyways, stairs, and elevators). The open bottom is important to prevent people from using the booths for... other stuff.

Women are out of luck, but I really don't care as public urination is overwhelmingly a male problem...
