Anyone know what's going on at 8th and Carson? That ugly vacant lot has had a lot of activity on it the last few days, including a number of caissons being drilled. Inquiring minds want to know!

I went to Bruskie's Sports Bar at 8th and Carson. I watched every single playoff game after the 2005 season, including Super Bowl XL from there, and then paraded up and down Carson like a rabbid maniac afterward. Is that bar still there?

Yeah, I meant 9th and Carson, not 8th and Carson. Brewski's is definitely still there, no doubt about it!

Either way, it's nice to see SOMETHING going on with that ugly vacant lot!

I have no opinion on the builder, but 30+ townhouses on 2.6 acres is an acceptable level of density for that location, so I hope the project goes forward.

I noticed that as well. The area is fenced off and it appears that some type of caisson drilling is going on. No signs detailing the project though....

I'm not sure where I heard it, but a long time ago when the buildings on that lot were being razed, the talk was that they were going to build a new St. Vincent dePaul building there, or something like that.

To address the question about the property at 9th and Carson st. (location of the drilling for the foundation)

It is owned by the Salvation army, who plans to construct a building to provide a Carson St store and additional housing (rumor is to provide rehab housing for woman, currently they serve just men at their adjacent building).

The development includes building on the lot (which prior was a parking lot + a demolished beautiful building at the corner cabbot and 9th) and remodeling the property that once housed Pretty bird on Carson st.

Not the greatest use of the property, as a resident of this end of South Side I would rather see the construction of private residential rather than this. BTW residents did fight this from going forward but as how our end of SahSide battled others (Mercy Behavioral) it was no use.

-- Information about the build
Trying to locate an article from the South PGH reporter that covered the build + dispute on the build.

Welcome to the forum! I also live in the South Side (on the Slopes about as far east as Southside Works). Nice to have a true "neighbor" on SSP!

Thanks also for the information on the 9th/Carson construction!

Hey Pyrohy, welcome to the forum n'at. I have long since moved ahta the Burgh, but still consider myself to be a life-long resident at heart, especially when rooting for the Black 'n' Gold!

Anyway, good to know about the development, and I agree it's not exactly the best use of that piece of land. I would have fought that myself had I been a resident there.

Oh, good to know Bruskies is still arahnd! Still, given that use within only a block of this use, is that really such a good idea? Rehab that is spitting distance from a bar? What next, building a gun store next to a prison?

Any news on the status of Schenley High School? I notice the 'For Sale' sign each day now on my way out of work.

Also, I like the signage they have on the Ford Building with all the info about the old motor corridor.

Hi guys,

I'll piggyback on pyrohy and introduce myself as well. Arrived four months ago via Chicago. I've been an ssp spectator for about a year or so, but this is my first time posting. Living in upper-Lawrenceville now and I'm quickly falling in love with Pittsburgh. Look forward to engaging in discussion with yin.
