The building was in pretty rough shape! Too bad they couldn't at least preserve the façade.

Wow, Ottawa sure dodged a bullet with that one. That first proposal looks about as appealing as the Rogers HQ building in Toronto.

Rough shape is an understatement. The roof ended up collapsing, taking out everything below it and leaving it just an empty shell. It's a real shame, it would have been 100-years-old this year.

This is the new proposal for the site:

"A proposal for the development and construction of an approximately 50,000 sf facility consisting of a cultural centre, a health centre and a college (the “Facility”) for the Centre français Hamilton inc. and Centre de santé communautaire Hamilton/Niagara. The facility would be built on the site of the recently demolished Century Theatre."

Hamilton's 15-story Element Hotel by Westin that was proposed back in 2009 was never built. A new Dollarama opened up the other day in the building that it was supposed to replace...

Well there aren't any pictures, but how about the proposed three Montreal stock exchange towers? Sad to see two weren't built because of financial restraints...

Original design for New Toronto City Hall, eventually (thankfully) the city decided to go with a design competition that got the current Viljo Revell design, and this was used for the Imperial Oil building on St. Clair:

.

Other entries:

I.M. Pei:

Perks & Will:

Halldor Gunnlogsson and Jorn Nielsen:

John H. Andrews and Macy DuBois:

Frank Mikutowski with Rafferty & Rafferty:

William Hayward:

Last one from me, I swear (for now)...

This one is a dodged bullet by Toronto. This is Metro Centre, a modernist design for the area around the rail yards, currently where the Skydome, CN Tower, Metro Toronto Convention Centre and Union Station are. It would have resulted in Union Station being demolished if it went through, but luckily the only thing that came of it was the CN Tower (heavily redesigned of course), and kind of the MTCC:

Oh wow! I am definitely happy with what we got rather than any of those you posted today! Definitely a better outcome for reality!

Really interesting posts all! Toronto definitely lucked out with the city hall and railway lands.

I don't mind the Ottawa proposal...looks better than what seems to be there now.

Wow, as much as I hate the current TO city hall, it sure is nicer than the other options that were on the table.

And they were actually musing on destroying the old city hall...for shame.

shudder. bigger than life and twice as ugly.

Looks like something Jean Drapeau (former Mtl mayor of old) would have loved. razing neighborhoods and historic buildings. out with the old, and in with le Corbusier.

I wish Alberta Plaza and Victoria Square had been built. VS would have been a great connecter between the CBD and Victoria Park/Stampede area.
