I like these smaller southern cities that have great character.

he did do it justice but if you think it looks incredible here, go see it in person, you will be mystified by its beauty . I've been three times and am looking forward to going again

Agreed -- Savannah is a city for wandering. The essence of it's greatness cannot be captured in photos although these are very nice!

The old part of the city covers a large area. Most of these photos are from the historic district which roughly coresponds to the city limits prior to the Civil War. It is all I could cover on foot in one day, but beyond this is the Victorian District which is almost the same size and just as densely built. I got a couple photos from that part of the city but only scratched the surface. Not all of the Victorian District is revitalized, some of it still looks pretty gritty.

You should visit it sometime. Everyone should. It may only have 350,000 people in it's metro but it is still one of this countries' great cities.

I took a lot of photos of the squares but none of them turned out well from a technical perspective. The lighting was difficult.

Savannah, meanwhile, left room for green space and trees, which are essential for shade and cooling in such a hot climate. I've heard that Savannah's grid pattern, which left all that room for greenery, is perhaps the most intelligent grid pattern in the country, if not the world. The smarts that went into planning Savannah are what make it so special.
I really love the Savannah grid. It probably has the smallest blocks of any city I have been to. It really seems to add to the city, it makes it feel more cozy and human scaled. Comming from a city that has giant blocks, I definitely noticed the difference it makes.

Agreed. The 360 degree awsomeness of Savannah is impossible to capture on film. On the other hand it makes it a great city to shoot because there are great photos in every direction you turn.

These are the best of the photos I took of the squares:

Well the row houses surprised me, too.

Looks like a lot of incredibly expensive real estate there.

the chef heads south, nice. i'm a big fan of savannah. for some reason i have vivid memories of certain places there, like the statue of john wesley with the craggy, mossy trees around it, the cables of the talmadge bridge, the cherry tomatoes on the bloody mary i had for breakfast ... it's a memorable town.

So if I've never been to either, should I go to Charleston or Savannah?

Both, lol. I like Savannah more, but I think there's probably more to do in Charleston.

The close proximity of Charleston and Savannah warrant a visit to both. That said, their close proximity shouldn't suggest the two cities have all that much in common. In fact, they are great Southern treasures but for very different reasons (location, urban layout, architectural significance, culture).

hmmm, i have to respectfully disagree. I loved Charleston but it wasnt nearly as nice as Savannah. Savannah's Historic district i believe is the largest in the US. The bar scene was more too.Charleston has great restaurants but so does Savannah. I just found more to my liking there and it's a place i want to keep going back to. Not sure if i am going back to Charleston though

Most people like one more than the other but it is about a 50/50 split as to which is better.

Charleston, but i'm biased because i have a lot of friends there. they're both great cities, but IMO Charleston's Revolutionary and Civil War battle sites give it the edge. it's also not in Georgia...but there goes my bias again.

Great shots! I love both but prefer Charleston because its a larger urban area. Luckily, being in Jacksonville, I'm a short drive away from both of these cities and St. Augustine.

Savannah - The Hostess City of the South

When you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask is ‘What business are you in?' In Macon they ask, ‘Where do you go to church?’ In Augusta, 'What is your grandmother’s maiden name.' But in Savannah, the first question people ask is ‘What would you like to drink?'

And they don't mean sweet tea.
