Thunderbird Relocating

So, this news alert just arrived: ASU is moving Thunderbird graduate school from its longstanding campus in Glendale to Downtown Phoenix. The location appears to be on the same block as the new law school building. Obviously, it will be much more compact than the suburban campus they're leaving behind. I don't know what will become of that land in Glendale.

Great freakin' news! Wonder how tall/stories we can expect on that parcel? Anyone have any clue as to the size of student population that will be moving downtown??

edit: just saw pic on PBJ article and 5 stories. Looks about same size as Law School. Would've liked something taller but this is great news.

Shame the building wont be taller, Thunderbird is pretty big on its own but I suppose there will be a lot of shared facilities downtown.

When ASU acquired the school a few years ago, I believe enrollment was about 1,000 with approximately half of that full-time students. I'm not sure where the trend has gone since then.

What's interesting is that UA's Eller MBA is now offered at the biomedical campus just a few blocks away, so this may be, at least in part, a competitive move by ASU. It's good to see downtown becoming a hub for professional education.

I'm an alum of UA Eller. There have been rumblings of Eller opening a stand alone building DT for awhile now too....

The views downtown are going to be great from that rooftop terrace

Until the data center sells and relocates that is.

Obadno, do you know something about the data center moving? NOW that would be really great news.

And yes, nice view!!!!! Also, I really like the design, especially the second view.

No, I wish. I have to imagine the land value of that block (and the Chase garage) has begun to appreciate above the use of data-center and garage.

I hope the property owners would be interested in possibly developing it (or selling to someone who does) for a more lucrative purpose.

That 2nd rendering looks fantastic. Glad to see better architectural designs finally starting to pop up in the core.

Looks good but ASU is running out of land fast they need to build taller buildings if they want to leave room for future expansion.

then again they have virtually unlimited money

As expected, there are complaints on social media from alumni. One calls the new building a "steel cage." I understand the nostalgia, but international business is all about cities these days. Even as the U.S. and the U.K. rethink their roles in international agreements and organizations, modern cities exchange goods, services, and ideas with their counterparts around the globe. ASU is smart to realize that an urban location is a good match for global business education.

This is the problem with alumni....and this goes to alumni from all universities across the country. Just because you attended a school for 2 to 6 years doesn't mean you get to dictate the future of the campus and students. Alumni are just a blink in an institution's history. ASU will be around for decades...perhaps hundreds of years after yesterday's Alumni have been long gone.

Stop dictating what a school should do for todays students and the future. I think the building looks fantastic and modern...the way it should.
