Well I'm not really talking about something huge like building a whole new system or something, just some fairly substantial tweaks. I don't see how hard it would be to program a next train thing with our platform displays, especially with the millennium-line style displays. I'm sure the system keeps track of car-type and other than that it's just painting some lines on the platform. And they are going to renovate a lot of the stations anyways for better crowd-movement so stop time can probably be reduced. If they also managed to get around whatever reason the trains have to travel at running speed in certain stretches, they can have faster runs although I wonder how much more maintenance that would cause. Even if they shaved 5 minutes off the travel time/speed and made it more efficient, that's probably +~10% capacity increase since you can shove more trains down the track. And, I'm sure we all like to get from point A to B faster. Dunno, just some thoughts =\

Rather than start a new thread, I'll post this question here:

What is the correct pronounciation of "MK-1" and "MK-II".... Is it "Em-Kay 1", or Mark 1"?

Mark 1 is easier to say in conversation, but the official term is "MK-1" as far as I know.

Definitely "Mark" as MK is an abbreviation for Mark. This is obviously a common method across different technologies to mark developmental process. Current British rail vehicles for example.

Like the VW Jetta, we're on MKV right now, but a lot of the VW fans still like the MKIVs better.

Bombardier is not longer the only manufacturer who can make our ALRT vehicles, this should spur competition to get better designed cars for better prices. Mindf you I like the 1300/1400 series MKIIs except for the A/C system.

When they get around to making the MK III's, we should make sure they include some of that 110km/h mojo the Beijing MK II's have. While it won't help on existing tracks, we could always design future lines to be 110km/h capable and once we have enough, exclusively run MK III's on those tracks and have them mix with current stock on existing tracks.

Question Ever been to Milan? ...

..... the subway there is an interesting creation. It's fairly recent, having been built, I believe in the late 1970s or early 1980s (don't quote me on that)
and is full of design, as one would expect of Milan, the design capital of Europe.

The stations are elegant, the trains modern, and at some stations they open on the left side, at others on the right.

What is so strange is that the trains grind along at an unbelievably slow speed - I'd guess beteween 40 and 50 km/h. It gives a ride on the Milan Metro a strange feeling, almost as if the slowness were intentionally incorporated as part of the system's "design signature."

Most unusual in a city twice the size of Vancouver

Why just 110kph?

The faster the better. Skytrain going over a straight or near-straight stretch like from Scott road to Columbia at 120+ kph would really cut down travel times

^ the train shouldn't even take half as long to get through the stretch near Science World, but it does because of NIMBY's complaining about noise after their condos were built.

Maybe we could increase the speed of that section by 2 kmph every year and they won't notice.

The A/C systems on some new MKIIs are not working well at all. Translink should do some quality check on it before accepting the train delivery from vendor. I saw quite a few people opened the windows to get some fresh air in. The air in the train was so stale that I felt oxygen depleted.

Are you talking about the Canada Line trains or the SkyTrain trains? I've found the Canada Line trains to have very poor air-conditioning equipment... the air never gets cool even after like one trip from terminus to terminus. In some cases it's hotter inside than outside. >.<

On the other hand the airconditioning on the Mark 2 SkyTrains seems to work very well.

Well it is pretty hard to be cooler than the underground train stations!

I was in a new MK2 car and while they are very nice, it had this very strange drone/hum noise that would rise and fall non stop throughout the trip. It started to drive me nuts!

I think you people bitch about noise too much. MKIIs are incredibly quiet compared to other LRT systems around the world.

No it was not a normal noise, i had been on them before and did not hear it, this was really really loud and many people around me were commenting on it.

I have been on many other metro systems around the world and never heard a drone/motor hum this loud before.

I heard it might have to do with heat rising from the floor, as unlike the Mark I's and II's the Rotem trains have a lot of moving parts like a car and probably generate a lot of heat.
