SXSW rolls the dice and heads to Vegas with new component SXSW V2V
By Caitlin M. Ryan

We couldn't avoid it forever. Austin's most beloved behemoth, SXSW, has finally realized its full potential and will tap into another market this summer — a dry, arid up-and-coming (more on that later) unexpected market by the name of Las Vegas, Nevada.

But before the Austin-based masses panic and sling mud accusing SXSW of selling out, this was a carefully orchestrated choice of programming and location by the heads of the organization — and they have no intention of uprooting from Austin.

SXSW is staying here, this only means that they're expanding to Las Vegas. They say they have no plans to move out of Austin.

I understand. I'm just saying Austin is by no definition in the Southwestern United States, so I always thought it an odd name for a festival.

El Paso/the Texas panhandle you could maybe make the case for being in the Southwest, but otherwise Texas isn't really in any region of the country. Its just a big monster all its own thing.

I think that is why the name of the festival works so well. It isn't just Southwest, but South by Southwest. And that is what TX is, a mix of the south and southwest.

HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) - The Las Vegas Valley has been without a water park since Wet ‘n Wild closed back in 2004. With a recently announced land purchase, that could soon change.

Twenty-two acres of desert near the intersection of Gibson Road and Galleria Drive in Henderson have been purchased by Cowabunga Bay Las Vegas for more than $4.6 million.

Shane Huish, who owns Cowabunga Bay in Draper, UT, has partnered with Vegas Residential, LLC for the park.

UNLV stadium project clears final hurdle with regents’ OK

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2012...nnual-boost-v/

Nevada's higher education leaders unanimously approved UNLV's stadium proposal on Friday.

With the Nevada System of Higher Education's approval of a campus master plan, UNLV and its private partner Majestic Realty Co. can now move forward with the details of a proposal to build a covered, 60,000-seat stadium on its Maryland Parkway campus.

Officials hope the "UNLV Now" stadium project would be a "game-changer" for the university, and a major regional attraction that could bring the likes of an NFL exhibition game, Comic-Con and the Electric Daisy Carnival to campus.

In this case it means scaling Brooklyn Bowl up in size and accommodating the Las Vegas tourist demographic. The new location will have 32 bowling lanes on two floors, more bars, and lounge areas in addition to the main stage, floor level and a 2nd floor balcony. With live music, it's easy to understand: a low commitment and more often than not there will be tickets," said Woods.

MGM planning Strip water park at Circus Circus

MGM is asking the county for permission to reclassify almost 23 acres of land near the KOA Campground at Circus Circus from RV, commercial and hotel zoning to zoning for a recreational facility. MGM hopes to build a 5.5-acre water park there, on the north side of Circus Circus Drive, east of Industrial Road.

Moreno and Associates planning consultant Greg Borgel presented a blueprint for the park at the board meeting. Borgel is representing MGM during the plan’s approval process. He said the water park would likely be built if the board and County Commission approve it, but he did not have a cost estimate for the project.

Plans filed with the board call for a children's pool, a river channel that likely will become a lazy river and two water slides surrounded by more than 200 trees. Cabanas, two snack bars and a retail center also are outlined in the proposal, scheduled to go before the board tonight.

The facility would be located between the Circus Circus Manor motel and the Skyrise Hotel Tower, north of the Adventuredome and near the campground. No changes are proposed for those buildings.

Plans say the slides will be 65 and 90 feet tall. A 21-foot play structure is proposed for the children's pool. MGM's plans did not outline a proposed time table for the Circus Circus water park, but Borgel said similar projects take about 18 months to complete.

What’s billed as the world’s largest slot machine will dispense people instead of cash in June when the Fremont Street Experience unveils SlotZilla, a towering launch pad for new permanent zip lines beneath Fremont’s LED canopy.

Ground will be broken after the New Year’s holiday on the 120-foot tower that will double capacity on the existing temporary zip-line attraction that will feature a first-of-its-kind “power launch” system to shoot riders at accelerated speeds.

Fremont Street officials gave details on the $11 million attraction at a media event today.

The 11-story slot machine will be built between Third Street and Casino Center where the existing temporary zip-line facility operated by Flightlinez Las Vegas has sold more than 1 million rides since it opened in October 2010.

The new attraction will have two tiers of four zip lines. The lower lines will extend 850 feet and hang 75 feet above the ground and riders in harnesses will fly in a seated position.

The top lines will be 112 feet high and the line will extend 1,700 feet to the front of the Golden Gate hotel-casino. On the top lines, riders will fly in “super-hero position,” lying flat in harnesses, and will be launched at speeds of 35 mph with a propulsion launch system.

The new attraction will also have a two-tiered pricing system. The lower-level zip line will cost $20 a ride while the longer “zoomline” ride will cost $30 a ride. A two-ride package with both rides will go for $40.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority today approved the concept and the first phase of a $2.5 billion overhaul of the Las Vegas Convention Center that includes a World Trade Center building and a multimodal transportation center.

The board voted unanimously to back what is being called the Las Vegas Global Business District, which would be developed over eight to 10 years.

The first phase, which would include assessing land acquisition needs, approving financing arrangements, arranging requests for proposals for proposals for planners, architects and project managers and making some minor improvements in existing space, would cost an estimated $150 million.

The first phase of the project is expected to run through 2014, and the LVCVA board is expected to see some of the first requests to approve budgets and financing by its May meeting.

The LVCVA already has the bonding capacity to handle the $150 million in financing for the initial phase of the project and about 25 percent of the capacity for the entire plan. Ralenkotter said his office is exploring a variety of financing options, including seeking grants that it would qualify for making it an environmentally sustainable development.

In addition, Ralenkotter is exploring proposals for private companies to build the World Trade Center component and lease it back to the LVCVA. He’s also formed a committee of shareholders from the transportation industry – representatives of the Regional Transportation Commission, the Las Vegas Monorail and the bus, limousine and taxi industries – to work on the details of the transportation hub.

There’s also a plan to develop more outdoor gathering spaces and to enhance the Convention Center campus with some iconic design elements. Ralenkotter, who has been with the LVCVA for nearly 40 years, looks to bring some historic imagery to the campus with classic resort signage, representations of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign and a large structure reminiscent of the rotunda that served as the first Convention Center in the 1960s and '70s.
