Definitely impressive. Noticed the apartment building is screened back. Hope that's not an omen that it's no longer part of the development.

I figured it was podium parking for the apartments...

In the 4th photo, you can see some balconies jutting out. I don't think we have to worry.

I think we've all confirmed (and Fawd) the apartments are staying. Can we put this topic to bed?

Downtown Phoenix grocery store one step closer to reality

RED Development hosted a groundbreaking ceremony last week to celebrate the start of construction at Block 23, the mixed-use project in downtown Phoenix. The development will be home to the central core’s Fry’s Food Stores.

Slated to finish in 2019, Block 23 will include approximately 330 apartments by StreetLights Residential, 200,000 square feet of creative office space, restaurant and retail uses along with above- and below-grade parking.

Meh, I never subscribed to the "grocery store at all costs" craze. A grocery store is essentially a suburban concept -- who needs a local bakery, deli, produce store, etc. when you can park in a monstrous garage, do it all at once, and drive back off to Midtown.

Doesn't mean one wasn't inevitable. But, look at any big cities' grocery stores and you'll find blank walls or, in the better cities, small retailers that hide the sides. The renderings are great if Fry's plans on stocking their shelves in the center to leave vast views open from its windows.

I shop only where the view is great!!!! LOL When someone shops, they are looking at the food not the scenery. That doesn't mean windows aren't nice, but it is very easy to achieve both windows and productive shelf space and other retail that doesn't block any view or natural light.

Looks like there were 2 tower crane obstruction evaluations submitted. Latitude coordinates are slightly different, so can these be 2 separate tower cranes at 400ft?

*Edit. Just browsed through the new FAA Evaluations and there are 4 separate tower crane evaluations all at 400ft. Safe to say, we won't see 4 cranes at 400 ft., so going to assume there will actually be only 1 tower crane until otherwise...

I've been quite surprised by the lax responses myself, lol. This is easily 180' over the current proposed residential building height. I'm wondering if they've found an anchor tenant to warrant the office tower to be built?

So does anyone know what is going on at Block23. I haven't really seen any activity here. Are they going to start blocking off the whole block? Or are they going to just start on the Frys first?
