You must be talking about Ubehebe crater which is indeed a volcanic crater. It was the result of rising magma mixing with water quickly become steam creating an explosion. The landscape around the crater is black from the resulting lava fields. It's a very cool alien looking area. I was there in March and it was really cold and windy.

Whoa. Amazing scenery. I was out there last year and don't remember it being as beautiful as in your photos.

I made the mistake of going to Death Valley in August in 05 I think. 127 degree heat. Not at all the business.

great shots of a breathtaking landscape.

I think death valley is the first time I heard complete silence. No cars, no planes, no wind, no nothing except the ringing in my ears. I can't wait to go back some day.

I always forget to check out the General Photography area of this forum and I am late to see mind blowing threads like this one. Echo Park really is a phenomenal photographer, which makes it all the more sad he is gone from this forum.
