Buffalo, New York - University Heights

The University Heights neighborhood is in the Northeastern part of the city limits, adjacent to the State University of NY at Buffalo South Campus, generally known as UB. The University was founded as the University of Buffalo in 1846 by former President Millard Fillmore, who made his home in the area. The area of the university is at the highest elevation within the city limits. The campus area was formerly the location of the Erie County Almshouse and Poor Farm until the late 1800s, when it relocated to Forest Avenue, and UB acquired the land and buildings in 1909.

Hayes Hall, part of the original Almshouse, built in 1874, as seen from Main Street.

Almost looks like its own little college town. Nice.

Shouldn't the Lake Effect Diner be on the South Side of the city?

I can dig! I do like me some Buffalo. The city name is cool and it's a city that if I had a gazillion dollars i'd love to invest in (and do whatever i could to attract more investment) along with Pittsburgh and Detroit. I guess you could say that I have a soft spot for these cities.

It is the spire of a sculpture called "Vertical Presence-Grass Dunes" by Beverly Pepper:

I'm intrigued by Buffalo becuase of your threads. I've visted on business and just spent time out by the largest mall in the area(the name escapes me right now). The city is now on my list to visit and spend some quality time in. Thanks for the photos.

Thanks. There are so many interesting neighborhoods in the city that don't get recognized in these threads, and are often under appreciated by the locals. I plan on trying to get around the city more in the next few months to highlight a few more areas, and I will also plan on updating my current neighborhood threads if something catches my eye.

I went to UB for two years, had some architecture classes down on the Main Street campus and then went to night school amongst all the bars and frats down that way (is The Steer still there??). Good m̶a̶m̶m̶a̶r̶i̶e̶s̶ memories!

Really nice architecture all around there. I especially like the foursquare homes that give Buffalo such a solidly Midwest vibe, and UB South definitely has a few standouts. Nice photos

A few more University Heights neighborhood photos to include some during the COVID shut downs, along with some pictures taken as late as this morning.

And into the neighborhood, which includes some blocks of student rental housing, and other areas of larger well maintained Craftsman style homes.

All in all, the neighborhood had been hurt in recent years as the majority of undergraduate classes were shifted to the suburban campus, and many smaller businesses suffered. 2020 shutdowns and remote learning also was a hit. However, there may be some positive momentum occurring as home buyers are unable to find enough homes available in the North and West Side neighborhoods and are looking more at this part of town. There are new student apartments also being constructed in the area due to proximity to the metro stations, although a larger project was stalled while in-progress during COVID, and now costs and funding are an issue.
