The cladding is looking really good.

And this:

"Silverstein, of course, is the developer of the World Trade Center and many other Downtown buildings. But while the company’s other developments in the vicinity of Ground Zero have been (or will be) in the pristine Neo-Modern idiom that one associates with their architects — Fumihiko Maki, Lord Norman Foster, Richard Rogers and Skidmore Owings & Merrill — Stern’s building is more traditional in its references, as one would expect from this architect."

Let's see.. Maki, Foster, Rogers and SOM - which one of these 4 things is not like the others?

Guess the journo has some grudge against David Childs

hmm I need to see more of the facade + windows before judging. So far I'm a little concerned. From the renderings it looked like pale light brown color

I'll compare photos of 15 CPW/30 PP to get the whole picture.

almost looks like wood. Give it a few years and it'll age well in NYC air.

Not to wax poetic about SOM, but the firm is an opposite model to the other 3 you listed, in that the partnership has ownership over all the work. They aren't called "David Childs" or (formerly) "Adrian Smith" buildings. They are SOM buildings. The culture of big name starchitecture just isn't important, whereas it basically defines the other 3 firms.

As an aside, SOM is the only firm of the bunch to have 2 buildings at the WTC.

But the point of the original article is a good one - Silverstein chooses his architects carefully to make sure the product he is delivering is the right one. The best modern office building calls for an architect like SOM or Foster. The best historicism (which often means high-end residential) demands someone like Stern. As a building enthusiast, I think it is really great.

What's the problem? It looks exactly the same color as Woolworth's stone

The Woolworth is actually glazed terracotta tiles, so slightly different appearance than this.

the base looks pretty rough right now, it'll probably look better with the windows installed.

So I read the construction update from yimby and my suspicions were correct.
It was not limestone afterall which is why it didn't look similar to 15 CPW. Shame because a slight variation in color can make all the difference.

15 is a pale light brown color whereas 30 PP is a brownish yellow.... it almost looks like freshly cut wood/lumber.

It can be patched and hardly noticed.
