Upward, did some quick internet research of people who've used tripods on the tower. They say they didn't have any problems, and that the staff is very accomodating, in fact, to photographers.
Make sure you show us your views! I never made it to the top of Tour Montparnasse, but did make it to the top of the Eiffel, at night. Unfortunately, it was with a crappy, crappy camera.

Thanks! That's good to hear. That will actually justify bringing my tripod to Paris (and, in fact, having brought it to Europe at all, since I've yet to use it).
I hope to go in the evening and take pictures in the dramatic and contrasty light of sunset (weather permitting, of course ), and of course I'll post them in City Photos.
It's weird that various places encourage photography but prohibit tripods. I think that it's usually an attempt to control commercial photography.
When I lived in Paris and friends visited me, I would take them to the top of the Tour Montparnasse because it had the best view of Paris. When you are at the top of the Eiffel Tower, the view is great except for one thing: you can't see the Eiffel Tower. The observation deck of the Tour Montparnasse is literally on the roof of the building and it is open-air. It's literally breathtaking. I highly recommend it too because it's one of the best-kept secrets in Paris--very very few tourists know about it, and as a result, it is quite likely you will have the whole place to yourself:cool : . Shhhhhh!!!!
It is a great building and I'm sort of glad that it's the only skyscraper in the area. It makes it so much more striking. The story I've already heard is that there was a city-wide ban on skyscrapers, but that a certain developer was hungry to build inside the city limits and managed to get this approved while most of the members of the planning board that supported the ban were on vacation. I'm not sure how true that account is, but I always appreciated the craftiness.
Ahh I've always loved this building, its funny how it sticks out over Paris but thats one of the reasons I like it so much. The design, so sleek and simple.
Well, yes it does stick out like a sore thumb, and from the top of the Grande Arche in La Defense it ruins the view of the Eiffel Tower - it is literally right behind it on the horizon.
BUT, we must remember that there are always two sides to the argument. Some of my close family live in Paris and they say you do get the best views of the city from the top of the tower - mainly because you can see Paris with the Eiffel Tower, rather than Paris from the Eiffel Tower.
Plus apparently its free to go up, which is much better than the extortionate prices to go up the ET.
(And I don't think it looks that bad - it's no Chrysler Building but its a damned sight better than some)

Most Parisians hate this building. (My sister lives in Paris.) The reason the view is the beat in Paris is that it is the only place in the city that you don't have to look at the Tour Montparnasse. I had dinner at the restaurant on top of the tour twenty years ago. It was overpriced and undercooked.
