90 minutes in San Antonio

I'll look for any excuse to go to San Antonio. Back in March I went down there with my mom and sister who were attending a dog show at the Freeman Coliseum. It's only 6 miles from downtown on the East Side and I knew I'd have some time to goof off in downtown, so I plotted my route and brought my bicycle along. I had about 90 minutes to ride around for some photos. I'll be back there again next month, and I'd like to get some photos of the neighborhood along the route. Also the first six highway shots are from earlier this month when we went through San Antonio.

~Thanks for looking.

Thanks for your tour along San Antonio, Kevin!

You took a lot of nice pictures for only 90 minutes there, so you did a long walk. Interesting paintings and different views of the downtown. It looks it was very warm during your visit, wasn´t it?

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

I'm so glad they are restoring and building upon that old theater. That side of downtown is pretty barren, hopefully that will liven it up a bunch.

San Antonio looks real neat! I want to get there someday! Is the painting of the singer near the top of Selena?

It actually wasn't too hot. And I rode my bicycle which made it even more easy. I think it was in the low or mid 80s. The day after I took these we went back to San Antonio for the 2nd day of the dog show, and it poured down rain. You couldn't see downtown anymore from where we were.

The artwork was a bunch of paintings hanging on the construction fence at the Tobin Center. That's the old theatre that photolith mentioned. The building is getting a total renovation and expansion. I have to be honest, though, I'm not a fan that they did this. The Municipal Auditorium was one of the best looking buildings in San Antonio. It'll be greatly changed on the Riverwalk side. I'm sure it'll be a boost to that area of downtown, but I always liked the old dome. I think it will have better interaction with the Riverwalk at least.

Here are the renderings showing what it'll look like:

These show the construction process. It is a neat project.

Do you mean the 2nd painting photo? I think you may be right. I hadn't noticed, but that probably is supposed to be Selena.

Was the bridge recently remodeled? I'm looking at google maps and it looks like the "before" time.

I know that the bridge has been restored since at least 2010. Those Google Map images are out of date. If you look at it with Google Earth it shows the bridge restored. The Google Earth images are from April of last year. The Google Map views must be before 2010.

There are some great individual buildings in San Antonio, but the skyline as a whole is fairly unattractive. Then again, it's a downtown much better at street level.

It's so odd that my only experiences of San Antonio are all by train (at least from an American perspective). I've been through there 3x on Amtrak (the stop is 3 hours westbound and like 60-90 min eastbound to/from Dallas, or at least it used to be) so I've explored downtown, but never seen anything outside of that.

That renovated performing arts center looks nice.

Yeah, downtown at street level is where it's at. I haven't been there in years, but the core of downtown was always jam packed with people, traffic, and historic hotels and other buildings. Of course, there's the beautiful River Walk but it's mostly tourists (still nice, though). Since it's a Spanish city (or Mexican), I especially like it.

I just wish we could have kept AT&T HQ in SA but Randall had to take them away.
