Hollywood Boulevard and Orange Drive in 1905.

found tonight on ebay

I'm quite impressed by the exotic buildings in this early photograph.

Notice the building at middle-left with the tall turrets (the turrets are somewhat hard to see).
Also intriguing is the building at lower-right with the prominent skylight and tower.
In the upper portion of the photograph there is a building that resembles a high school (with a 'quasi' dome).
Regrettably, I am unable to identify any of these early Hollywood buildings.

Right, the building with the dome is Hollywood Union High School.

The turreted building at middle-left is the Hollywood Hotel. Gone, of course. But I was amazed to find that 107 years later, at least one of the buildings in your picture still exists, and is in use (and even iconized) by the American Society of Cinematographers. Many more historic pics at link below.

Not all houses in SoCal have rain gutters. The house I grew up in (which btw, my parents still live in) doesn't have rain gutters. The apartment building I live in, though, does.

Great pics! Very noir shot. I used to go to a barber in that building, which was on the Mentor Ave. side. The barber was a Latino guy who reminded me of Buddy Hackett. I went to him for a number of years, and then one time I went by his place and saw that he had closed for good, I assume he retired (this was around 2002 or so). It took me a while to find another guy who gave me haircuts that I actually liked. No offense to women who cut men's hair, but I never really liked any haircuts that I got from women. Anyway...

The comedy club called The Ice House is the building just north of there. Its name comes from the fact that, well, it used to be an ice house.

It looks as if the DMV has always been hell on earth.

At first I thought this was the same building in both photos...but count the windows to the left of the fire escape.

___

below: A loooong line in 1951. The address is 3500 Hope Street.

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/search...=1329441613396

So what's that neighboring building to the left?

Oh no, e-r...the DMV is a nightmare from coast to coast, especially the power-tripping cretins behind the counters. I know it's perhaps uncool to wish it on anyone these days, but never have I been less sad to see people lose their jobs as more of the processes are done by the consumer online....

I just checked the address. The building at 3500 Hope Street (and it's neighbor) is still there!

google street view

below: A glimpse at the neighbor (the lattice-like details that appear at the corners of the building are gone).

google street view

below: They both barely survived the construction of the Harbor Freeway.

The neighbor is labeled 'East Library Building'....perhaps it's a storage facility.

I've been meaning to do a SEIBU post for quite some time..so this seems like a good time to do so.

below: SEIBU, the Japanese department store opened on March 1962 at the southeast corner of Wilshire & Fairfax.
This was three years before LACMA.

SEIBU only lasted from 1962 to 1964. From 1964 to 1986 it operated as an Ohrbach's department store.

I just found out the rooftop restaurant space is still intact!

oh Ohrbach's my grandmother use to take me to the kids dept when i was younger, and the entrance on fairfax i totally forgot about that,i do remember there being a pond on the roof deck, also the one thing that sticks out in my mind is the spiral drive way! granny had full range of the store and got a big discount for being friends with the former owners off the Bullocks/I Magnin system. After shopping we would go get gas at a mid century 76 that was right behind may co and then head for the tea room at bullocks(which was still open in the late 80s early 90s).

It is the same building, e-r. The building at left in your pics is still there (3440 S. Hope). The Harbor Freeway is right across Hope from these buildings.

A simple house at 4932 Cimarron Street. I found a couple photos of the interior as well.

google street view

below: I often forget what fine workmanship exists in the interior of these middle class vintage homes.

They just don't make them like they use to.
