I mean we all know it's a massive benefit for city shaping, no one can deny that. But I would have thought the primary objective for a transit project would be...transit oriented.

Or at least 1a and 1b. But what do I know?

The projects that don't help people get around are rewarded with poor ridership gains. Sure, the expensive rail projects will shape the city but they will otherwise underperform. Sounds like the Sheppard subway. Who is seriously considering extending that line as a subway?

Not related but an interesting read

Free public transit is gaining popularity in European cities
By Alison Griswold

How do you encourage people to take public transit more? One option is to make it free.

That’s what the city of Dunkirk, France, did in September when it made buses free and accessible to all passengers, even visitors. With a population of roughly 200,000, Dunkirk is the largest city in Europe to offer free public transit, the Guardian reported.

Dunkirk’s system was inspired by Tallinn, Estonia, the first European capital to provide fare-free service on buses, trams, and trolleys to registered residents. Locals pay €2 for a “green card” that gives them unlimited free trips. The program started in 2013 and, as of 2016, Tallinn claimed it was turning a €20 million-a-year profit.

I'd say this is the fundamental challenge in transportation planning today. Far too many people, including planners, view transit as a development tool first, transportation tool second. Absurd.

But it development explodes in and around the transit stations, would ridership also not grow too, at least eventually?

But it always rewards the developers and the newcomers while existing residents pay for it.

I know this is the way it works but I would hope for plans that do help existing residents as well.

It's true. Some get lucky with the route being close to their homes, but that's few and far between.

I'm "lucky" in that I'm a 10 minute bus ride from the King/Victoria LRT stop

I wonder how that’s gonna unclog l’Autoroute Métropolitaine.

I didn't realize the Kitchener/Waterloo LRT was up and running (testing) already.

It’s been testing for quite a while now, as the official opening day keeps getting pushed back.

not much, you're talking about the A-40 in the West Island ? , which is not the Métropolitaine. The A-40 ( Félix-Leclerc ) in the West Island. The MET, between the A-15 (Décarie) interchange and boul.Henri-Bourrassa , about 21km long,

Ottawa's new rapid transit line looks like a cross between Calgary's C-Train and Vancouver's Skytrain systems.

I can't imagine this happening.

Anyways, the last two LRT cars have been loaded for delivery in Kingston and expect to arrive in Kitchener next week. These two cars are expected to be ready for testing by the end of December.

Depends on where you look; the long, low-floor vehicles don’t look too much like either of those systems.
