The area you're looking at is where the street grid changes in Sunnyside from the regular cardinal grid east of 5A St to the ~45 deg grid west to 9A St.

The 3-storey building you see at the right edge of the picture is at the intersection of 5A St NW with 7 Ave NW (to the east) and 2 Ave NW (hidden behind the 3-storey building). Its triangular parking lot on 5A is entirely in its shadow. On the near side of that building is the largish park on 3 Ave NW.

Virtually in the middle of the picture is what is now the turnaround for the #420 (iirc) at 5 St and 7 Ave.
Camera position appears to be mid-700 block Crescent Road NW

Agreed! Nice job coming up wit that angle from 1955.

Aside from the buildings in the core, the biggest thing I notice is how much more green is today.... even compared to 1986.

A great way to find old skyline photos is to visit the Glenbow Museum's photo archive, online, and type in search criteria like "4th avenue" or other downtown street names. I found some great photos of Bankers Hall 1 as a pit, and various other gems from the early 80s.

A slideshow of old McMahon Stadium photos, with some aerial shots. Show how the stadium has grown over the years:

Wow these pictures are awesome!

I remember as a kid moving here in 1980 seeing the Calgary Tower and thinking how tall it was. It was the tallest at that time I think lol.
