That ambomination was even worse right after 9/11. The black facade and large, flat rectangular shape made if look like a giant tombstone.

Hope to see that one demolished in my lifetime.

1 Libery Plaza is a great building. Back when I only liked low-rise architecture and didn't care about international-style buildings, I was in NYC for the first time and was immediately hooked by the way the pattern of steel and the sheer, clean lines interacted in the light, and I stood there for about 5 minutes just staring up. It was one of the first buildings, alongside TD Center, that made me adore International Modernism.

I rather like One Liberty, it looks like it could kick some ass and take names.

As for the Jumeirah beach residence towers, I would do something with them, so that they still had a unified look, but each block of towers had some unique characteristic to make them stand out. Perhaps each block could have its own distinct crown, like the World Financial Center towers of NYC. One block gets pyramids, another gets domes, and so on. Or perhaps each block gets its own color of glass- reflective glass comes in lots of colors, so one block could get light blue, another gets teal, another gets gold, and another gets a reddish shade, and so on.
All the buildings would have that buttercream coloring and similar design for unity, but different crown features or glass colors would really have helped each cluster within that group stand out.

One Liberty Plaza is one of the most beautiful buildings in NYC. It's even more beautiful than Singer Building.

Cut out the levity!

But anyway. I think the question should not be "are these the ugliest buildings in the world?" but instead, are these the ugliest significant buildings in the world either because of the cost to construct, the purpose they are built for or the impact they have on the area. I would say that for many of the ones that have been posted the answer is a resounding yes.

Now as for my vote for ugliest building ever without taking those things into consideration, I would have to say this liquor store in Pontiac that has six different cladding materials and looks like it is about to fall apart. But then again, that wasn't designed by an architect, but was simply built by God knows who and added onto over God knows how many years to become the monstrosity that it is.

As far as the type of stuff posted goes? That elephant building thing.

And Amy Winehouse is (was) more beautiful than Evangeline Lilly.

I still don't understand what people hate in that building. It looks clean, modern, sophisticated, and has cool repetition on its facade. I'm probably going to be eaten alive by the anti-modernist nazis for this...

They hate it because there are thousands of clean, modern, sophisticated buildings in the world and there was only one Singer Building.

I am not saying I agree but now you know, and knowledge is power.

Why is that building so special, it's just another boring modern box. There's thousands of them littering all of our cities.

It's got nothing to do with "anti-modernism nazis." You stated, "I also think 1LP is better than the Singer." You probably would have been better off with something like, "I personally like 1LP better than..." Singer was a cherished landmark and worlds tallest for a period of time. It is a much loved building. Implying that anyone who considers its demolition a tragic loss is some sort of "anti-modernism nazi" is both ignorant, insulting, and betrays your own extreme dogmatic position.

I personally have no problem with 1 LP. I absolutely love Singer and would take it over 1LP any day. This is coming from someone who likes and appreciates Modernism.

I never said that anybody who liked it is an anti-modernist nazi. It's just that the actual anti-modernist nazis who want mid-century modernism destroyed (there's a few lurking about on this site) would easily get pissy that somebody doesn't like the strange shape and colour of the former building and prefers a cooler black building. I don't care what anybody says, 1LP is an underrated building that must at least have a chance to see better appreciation instead of just the average "oh, what a boring box" comments. All the comments that seem to defend it are replied harshly, which is sickening.

If you like one liberty plaza you should like all very plane nothing to it buildings. Simple is what you like. I believe one L P is a very extremely depressing building that brings down the whole area. It could do with a face-lift. Dark buildings don't make people happy because the whole areas light is just taken away. Which with the canyon effect is already dark. Would you paint your walls black in your home? Not unless you were going for something moody. It's hard to pull off. However I think I've gone way off my base because it doesn't matter what color OneLibertyPlaza is because it's a damn boring ugly building that ain't unique in any darn way.

OK, I'm confused, are you disagreeing with each other? Or do you all just hate liberty plaza?

And WTF, leave Amy Whinehouse alone.
