Could a team in Red Deer work?

If there's interest locally (is there?) It could enter system a while from now when (if) a multi-tier pro-rel system is administered, as is the plan. Starting out, it's highly unlikely if we're in a ten-team league that includes Calgary and Edmonton.

A team anywhere can work with the right combination of ownership, local support, and stadium.

The thing with the CPL is that it will be, eventually, scalable. If the proposed pyramid structure is introduced then most smaller towns and cities should be able to host teams if they have the right combination of the above factors. They might not be top-flight teams but they'll still be teams.

I'm catching up on things a bit but i'm not the biggest fan of the Valour FC name...the crest is nice (if a little Craft Brew-y).

FC Edmonton's updated crest and branding is nice and i'm glad they didn't go overboard with the rabbit stuff but still managed to sneak it into the new crest. With potential teams in Quebec City and Victoria coming soon this league should be fun next year.

Ultimately I think this will mean the end of USL/PDL teams in Canada. The biggest obstacle to that would be the level of play. The MLS teams would need to be confident that their young players would be playing at a high enough level to allow them to develop enough to eventually graduate to MLS as a Home Grown Player.

I didn't say anything about the history behind the name. I just don't think Valour FC itself is a very great name.

They kinda go hand in hand unless it's something like Raptors

The name and logo are definitely sub-par. Classic example of trying too hard to appeal to a tradition that simply doesn't exist here.

Incidentally, I saw at the Bomber game last night that the team shop has a rack of Valour FC stuff on sale already.

I actually like the Valour name (the logo, not so much). The throwback to history is one of the appealing aspects of it to me. It connects the name and team back to something that is uniquely Winnipeg in nature and does more to immediately tie itself to the city than a generic name like "Winnipeg 9" or, god forbid, "Winnipeg FC".

Haha... for sure, credit for at least some effort at being original.

But that said, the Winnipeg FC name has already been taken for the better part of a century now:

Langford CPL team a one touch pass away from being a done deal
LINDSEY HORSTING Jun. 19, 2018 4:30 p.m.

The finishing touches are being put on a deal to bring a professional soccer team to Langford.

Langford Mayor Stew Young met with B.C. Hydro last week and said it was a good meeting, but there is still nothing concrete to announce about the team yet.

But that didn’t dampen Young’s optimism about the future of the franchise.

“I’m so encouraged that this is going to happen unless there’s any unforeseen circumstances,” Young said.

He added B.C. Hydro is doing the leg work to figure out the exact cost of moving pole while the City of Langford is applying for federal and provincial funding.

Young noted the team would start the 2019 season with temporary seating on the City-owned right of way on one side of the pole. The other side would be an open area for fans.

For the inaugural season, he said they agreed they could increase seating to 5,500 seats and when the pole is moved increase seating to 8,000 or 9,000 seats. Officials from the Canadian Premier League spent time touring the Island and interviewing soccer players for a promotional video for the league.

According to the Moncton Times & Transcript, there are "several interested parties" in discussion with the CPL about bringing a team to Moncton to play in the 10,000 seat Moncton Stadium on the campus of UdeM.

https://www.telegraphjournal.com/tim...=story-rotator (pay wall).

- discussions are currently in a "preliminary stage".
- the CPL are in discussions with 22 markets around the country.
- seven teams are committed to joining the CPL
- the CPL wants 8-10 teams by the start of 2019, and 12 teams by 2020.
- operating costs for a franchise will be $3-5M per year
- to support this, average attendance per game will have to be 6.000-7,000.
- since Moncton already has a soccer ready stadium with seating for 10,000, we would be a prime market for a franchise.

Team kits will be unveiled sometime in the fall. Hints at a league kit manufacturing/supply deal.
