Vladivostok //forgotten gem

My last stop in Russia was Vladivostok, located in the Russian Far East about 40 miles east of China and 80 miles northeast of DPRK. As a whole, this may have been my favorite city in Russia. It had a bit of a cosmopolitan feel in contrast to some other Russian cities. The hilly terrain surrounded by water and the architectural vibe reminded me a lot of Vancouver and SF. I definitely recommend checking it out if you're in Manchuria, Korea or Japan. It's a nice cultural contrast given its close proximity.

That place is so surreal. I can't get over just how far away it is from the rest of main Russia. I wonder what it'd be like to live there.

Very cool pics.

Always boggles my mind that there is a majority European ethnic major city in Far East Asia.

I have been curious to go there for a long time.

Wonderful set.

Astounding photos. Vladivostok has always fascinated me, just because it is SO isolated.
But I must say, this is NOT what I expected it to look like, at all. It looks fun... growing... vibrant... full of character... beautiful even! Thanks so much for opening my eyes!

Really cool. It's distance from Moscow (about 6,000 KM!!) must be why this city doesn't seem to exude that Russian "heaviness".

Do many Chinese live there? Any cultural influence from the nearby countries?

Awesome thread ! You really captured the soul of Vladivostok.
I went there in 2011 and again in 2013, and I agree with you, it's also probably my favorite city in Russia.
It's like the perfect mix between Russian character and international flavor, gritty neighborhoods and new developments. And the city is changing so fast.
When I went there in 2011, there was no bridge, two years later there were these two massive suspension bridges. And countless of new highrises being built.
I can't wait to return to this city : actually one of my future travel plans is to go back to Vladivostok (maybe only by using trains from Nantes, if I'm brave enough) and then take a ferry to Japan (I've never been there, and I've always thought how cool it would be to go there while not taking any plane).

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like this place is well positioned to be a great city location-wise. You would think its proximity to major east Asian cities has got to work in its favor.

Thanks for the awesome photos. A place I hadn't thought much about. I'm really interested now.

nice snaps, but if anything this looks more like vancouver and sf’s ghetto nephew. it reeks of corruption, because its a beautiful setting and should be better, at least to be considered in that league. maybe its just what you focused on tho, i’d like to see more of the newer stuff and maybe some more residential neighborhoods. however, it definately has one of my favorite city names, it rolls off the tongue well.

Vladivostok looks like a city that is rundown and gritty but with potential; beautiful natural setting, a nice bridge and many new buildings under construction.
