^ I like the blonde girl in that band. Sandy Horne. She was cute and sexy back during my teenage years when that song came out. The rest of the band kind of looks like girls, but Sandy (hands on bass guitar) was cute.

Further inquiry into the origins of "ginobeat" has me to what I think is the very first gino track. That is, it has every element that is associated with the genre and casts the singing style, the song structure, the general riffs that become strongly associated with the style in the 90s. We head back to 1983 with Elaine Charles' debut single.

Pimpton, The Regina rapper extraordinare, released his video last week for Itchy Thumbs. He teamed together with Joey Stylez from Saskatoon for making of this track from the LP KCMKV2 released 18 months ago. As a side note, Joey had an extremely noteworthy break into the Saskatoon hiphop seen in 2004 when he was asked to open for 50 Cent in Saskatoon the night after his uncle was shot & killed in a drug related incident on Preston Ave on Saskatoon East side..

The Once and Amelia Curran are headlining this year's NL Folk Fest. My favourites - it's like I planned the event.

Listening to my favourites by them today to celebrate.

Now that your darling keeps you home,
There goes the best war we've ever had.
Now that nobody's all alone,
We'll turn forgiveness to forget.

If you're in town, you'll look me up,
And dance the days into the cups,
And you will talk of golden rivers flowing,
Giving you enough.

Bye, bye, years
Of deals and dolls
Bye, bye, Montreal

What wicked patterns we succumb,
From the warnings we have run.
Now, from a figure we have cut the mold,
And filled the stadium.

If in as many years I call you,
From the middle of it all,
Will you forgive me or forget,
That we were ever born at all.

Bye, bye, years
Of deals and dolls
Bye, bye, Montreal

Bye, bye, years
Of deals and dolls
Bye, bye, Montreal

And The Once... love them live. And they're just like me, at heart, when it comes to culture and identity.

Finally a version I can like. She didn't drag out the "low... ded" like she does live. Always get a giggle, they should've left it in the video.

A new one premiered today by Hey Rosetta!'s frontman for the Blue Puttees.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfou...ross-1.3656215

That's four memorial songs already this year, three of which are amazing. Awesome.

Quick question... this band is from here, but this particular song has been HUGE here. I'm curious if it's a local hit or if CBC has made them national.

Have you heard this song 100 times already this week?

Video Link

The video credits reference Ontario so SOMEONE has picked them up and is trying to make them national. Are they already? I'm half hoping not... I LOVE when someone is HUGE here and unknown elsewhere. Reaffirms the separate culture thing for me, which is rare when it's something mainstream in character, as this song is.

^^
impressive first video for a group/song I've never heard of before! I'm not sure how much pull CBC has for promoting music to be national in this country though to be honest. Didn't CBC have a star search contest a few months ago? It quite possibly went over like a lead balloon, at least in these parts, because CBC has half the CBC broadcasting affilitates on The Prairies as compared to Atlantic Canada even though Prairies has 3x the population..
A good place to track who's popular for top 30 music in Saskatchewan would be :
http://z99.com/top30

I'll have to make a point of checking over the next weeks to see if your group Repartee makes the top 30 in this province

A lot of the current favourite artists in the Province are ones that have or will be doing concerts in the province this Summer (Keith Urban, Arkells, Tegan&Sara, DNCE, Simple Plan, X Ambassadors, Strumbellas, Elle King etc.)

As far as a group becoming national or mainstream in Canada seems to have a lot to do with where artists network, make recordings and videos in more established national music promoting centres like Vancouver or Toronto (which it appears Repartee has done) or becoming popular in America first and then becoming popular by extension to other parts of Canada.

Just as examples from Saskatchewan, The Sheepdogs from Saskatoon didn't get national attention in other parts of Canada until they were chosen to be on cover of Rolling Stones magazine and be featured on American shows like Project Runway in USA first.
One Bad Son, Also from Saskatoon, didn't get any radio play outside of Saskatchewan until they were 'discovered' by Godsmack from Massachusetts and Buckcherry from LA.. Def Lepard and Judas Priest subsequently picked them up to go on tour with them..

A really interesting contrast on how networking and getting attention outside of Canada has to happened first before getting popular in Canada are two artists from Regina..

Shiloh originally from Regina, won a radio contest in Edmonton, got a recording contract in Vancouver and became popular in Canada once her song Operator got played on Disney Channel and Gossip Girls and she later would work with Lady Gaga and Katie Perry.

Video Link

Keshia Angeline also from Regina, with a Keri Hilson/Rihanna sound, has done a lot of recording in Saskatchewan but career hadn't taken off outside of Saskatchewan in Canada.. but has received some attention in Switzerland..of all places..

A little taste of Spirit of Newfoundland Dinner Theatre's version of Ours, not the opera of the same name. Theirs is called "Where Once They Stood, We Stand", a line from our old national anthem.

They're always fun. And they do quite a few different themes throughout the year. Mom never misses any, she's been to probably hundreds of shows by now, and I've been a half dozen or so times myself.

As I come back from the Maritimes, I post this [old but] funny video from Marc Labrèche personifying the legendary Sagouine singing a song about how easy the girls are in Quebec and the Prairies, and how sex life is dull in Ontario.
It makes me laugh a lot. A real gem full of canadian pride from coast to coast ;-)

Here are the lyrics

---Narration---

J’avions connu des cochonnes
Des filles de petite vertu
Mes les pires que j’avions connues
Venions du Québec et des Prairies

I need a beeaatt!

---Song---

À toutes les pionnières qui montrent leur derrière
Aux Marie-couche-toi-là dedans la Canada
À toutes les guidounes de Saskatoon
Shake it! Shake it! Shake it!

Faisions le missionnaire à Prince-Albert
Mais sont pas très ouverts à Vancouver
Portions le bébédoll quand on étions à Hull

Shake it! Shake it! Shake it!

Shake it! Shake it! Shake it!

Shake it! Shake it! Shake it!

Hhhhaaaaaaa

Shake it! Shake it! Shake it!
Shake it! Shake it! Shake it!

Hhhhaaaaaaa.

Fun! It reminds me of "Plat Deutsch" (sp?) songs in Manitoba. There's even one with a very similar video. They sing in Low German, their old language. It's very cute. Post some more... I have no access to these things you know except through you.

*****

I've posted this one before, probably 100 times... but I've had a few drinks tonight and it's my go-to drunk song.

Video Link

Just five Kings left, only Four can turn tricks...
The tallow is burning a bath for the wicks...

Some get it right, while some make mistakes...
Some hear the chorus, some only the breaks...
When singing the verse through the sips that they takes...
Some close their eyes while their memories ache...

Stuck in a town where your reach meets the view...
Where the dreams that you held were both fleeting and few...
They crackle like fire on their way up the floo...
Well, each day you're working, and weeks, and you're due...

AND IT'S ROW UPON ROW OF THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW!
AND IT'S ROW UPON ROW OF THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW!
Stand still as a choir that hasn't yet sung...
Stand still as a choir that hasn't yet sung...
No head goes unnodded, no head goes unhung...
And the time to head home has long ago come...

A guitar in the corner, its neck left unstrung
And the girl at the bar is impossibly young
Smiling bright, as the clock strikes a quarter past one

And it's row upon row... of the people you know...

Maria Peddle has fuck all up on YouTube yet, which is too bad. She's one of the best voices on the local scene. She was invited, for example, to sing the a capella tribute to the fallen at Memorial Day at the beginning of the month, and she blew it away.

And Kat is great. Saw her perform last night.

The performance itself is in Halifax, so forgive that, but basically everyone on stage is a Newfoundlander. Ignore Alan Doyle... it's worth it just for Damhnait Doyle's singing ol' Molly Malone. Love her.
