Great tour and commentary! Athens looks like a very comfortable and interesting little city.

I've been a REM fan since I bought Murmur in April 1983 and played constantly to my college friends. Still one of my favorite albums!

ahh good thx -- i was hoping for a fan who could relate! i did it for murmurs.com --

i wanted to call the thread shakin through athens, thats my fav murmur song and one of my fav rem songs, but youtube would not allow it. well, it has a demo, but its not as good. but pilgrimage is certainly fitting --

btw i did the same kind of annotated tour thread with mpls for the replacements, prince, etc. a while back.

Nice Montage

That was great mrnyc; I wish I could say it brought back more memories but my head was fuzzy back then.

I grew up in Marietta GA near Atlanta and saw REM at the Strand Cabaret on the square in the early 80's. I also went to several parties in Athens and saw Pylon, the Now Explosion (I think) and others that I am not sure of. I eventually moved to Athens in 1986 and absolutely loved the town. Kind of hated moving back to Atlanta. Still love REM and the B-52's from that era...

thx and fantastic to hear 'local' comments. indeed athens is a very comfortable and lovable college town.

funny i never even saw rem or B52s play, but i did see flat duo jets a few times, they were my real athens favorites. they definately influenced people like ty segall or jack white. i see stipe around here in ny once in awhile, he has a place here too. its all gone, but not forgotten!

Never been to Athens GA but thanks for the pics from the city where they hailed from featuring two of my all time favorite bands in REM & the B-52s!

Great tour. I spent many a night in my 20s at the 40 Watt. FYI, Kate Pierson of the B52s owns a motel up in the Catskills here in New York now. I've been there to check it out. It's very B52s and called Kate's Lazy Meadow.

This UGA student really appreciated this thread. Wonderful pictures; was hoping to see more of the campus on here but great pics nonetheless. I need to get me a nice camera so I can create an Athens/UGA album.

As always, Go Dawgs!!!

I did take this pic on Thursday afternoon. Those buildings behind the scoreboard are the main UGA Bookstore,Tate Student Center I & II, and the Zell B. Miller Learning Center (SLC) here on campus.

Great looking town!..Just as a sidebar, somehow I was aware that the B52-s were from Athens Georgia, and they were great when I seen them at a summer festival a few years back! The singer actually gave a little bit of a plug and ode to Athens between some songs..Thanks for the tour.

stellar tour, chappy. you hit all the staples and then some. it's automatic.

i caught the UGA/LSU game a few years ago (the one where the dawgs were jobbed for "excessive celebration" by the refs, who the SEC later made apologize), tied one on at caledonia and manhattan, then had breakfast at mama's boy the next morning. quite a town, athens.
