Another photo of Phoenix...if you can stand it.

I snagged this one-handed while driving on the southbound SR 51 ramp that arches over to eastbound Loop 202:

I hate the convention center from that angle.

I've always thought from this angle Phoenix looks like a big city.

Population-wise, yes. Cincinnati feels like a bigger city in terms of urbanity for chrissake.

I do like that angle (ditto the eastbound 10 from about the Stack). Makes the skyline look denser than it really is

no, phoenix is a big populated metropolis, with a small city inside of it.

It is a big city with 4+ million people. It just isn't as dense as other cities. If our midtown was merged with downtown, we would have a very enviable skyline..

No. That's absolutely not true. We would have 40 30 story office towers with no retail, no street scenes, and no mid rise or short apartment buildings and density. I consider a big city to be somewhere that is vibrant, dense, and happening. Phoenix is none of those things.

Nice shot. Its a good angle but as far as making the skyline look really full and dense I prefer views from the South looking North. It makes Midtown fill in behind Downtown plus you can get the Phoenix mountains in the shot.

This photo has a softness to it that I like. Almost a postcard like quality, what accounts for that Don?

maybe if I read what he posted instead of just looking I would've caught that!

Either way, I like the end result, its got a dream like effect.

The skyline has really densified in recent years. Its too bad the Collier Center Hotel and the W Hotel didn't happen, they'd help fill in that visual gap between Chase Field and the CBD.

Nice shot and angle Don but you probably shouldn't be taking pictures while driving.

actually, i think phoenix would still only have 4 30+ story towers. correct me if im wrong here but only 30+ towers anywhere in arizona are: sheraton, chase, monroe, and us bank building.

if mid-town and downtown merged, however, i do think we'd have a decent vancouver-esque skyline with nice density.

Our overall height is pathetic, but like it has been said, the appearance would be quite appealing, imo, if downtown and midtown were merged. Imagine about 40 buildings around 300'-400', then build one or two 600'-700' buildings in there, it'd be pretty impressive. But I guess there's no point in imagining something that is just never going to happen.

i hate to keep sounding like a stick in the mud here (whatever that means) but there's a lot of hyperbole going on about the height of Phoenix buildings. "40 buildings around 300-400''???? isn't that number more like maybe 10? i haven't checked emporis in some time but my guess would be there are no more than 10-15 buildings in all of phoenix that are over 300'. lots of 200-300' but not much over that i would guess. we really do have a pathetically height-challenged skyline (kinda like the suns inside game, haha).

There are 20 (including the new control tower at Sky Harbor) + Tempe has 1.

This includes buildings under construction:

Downtown:
300-500': 12
200-300': 8 (Including the baseball stadium)

Midtown:
300-400': 7
200-300': 12

Other:
300'+: 1 (Sky Harbor)
200'+: 1 (Children's Hospital)

Tempe:
300'+: 1 (Centerpoint)
200'+: 1 (Centerpoint)

I think the point stands that if all the Midtown towers were in Downtown Phoenix, that the skyline would basically be doubled. You'd have 39 towers downtown over 200', instead of 19. Big difference.

Yes, the majority would still be office but there are certainly some high rise condos in mid-town, more so than in downtown even. There would certainly be more people living downtown and even just having more office workers downtown would be a good thing.

While we lack super-talls, we're holding our own in the number of buildings > 250' category. Our twentieth tallest, for example, is taller than many cities that have tallests over us.
