I've always thought the idea of perpetuating the original sin of this building in keeping the elevator shaft to be a particularly terrible one. And to see it so poorly and clumsily executed is disheartening.

i think they are not worry to use high quality materials if someday in the future a building will rise on it and since the offices are towards park avenue no views would be obstructed. it is a shame since it is a very large building and is very prominent from many vantage points, they should have done that cladding a lot better

Yup. The cladding on the core is a huge disappointment.

They just began. They are past the roof setback and building the base that will support the three claws

Norman Foster’s 425 Park Avenue Heads For 897-Foot Pinnacle Above Midtown East

Quote:
Construction on 425 Park Avenue in Midtown is charging ahead toward completion, with the upper floors now taking shape. The 41-story, 897-foot-tall building is designed by Norman Foster, head of Foster + Partners, and is being developed by L&L Holding Company LLC. Adamson Associates is the architect of record. The final major elements yet to be assembled are the three glass fins that will stand atop the flat roof parapet. This architectural detail will define the tower among the surrounding buildings, especially when illuminated at night.

This transitional stage is further enhanced with the sleek lines of the metal panels that cover the large diagonal steel columns. These critical members transfer the loads from the reinforced concrete core to the floor slabs, and finally downward toward the foundations. The outer steel perimeter columns create a rigidly sound structure and also give 425 Park Avenue a distinctive structural expressionist aesthetic.

The glass curtain wall is rapidly rising on the third tier of the tower, while opaque, gray-colored metal panels on the eastern elevation also make their way up to the roof. The yellow construction crane remains standing in the middle of the main western elevation, and part of the floor slabs on the lower levels are still cut out. These should be filled in once the crane is eventually disassembled upon completion of the upper stories and the trio of signature fins.

425 Park Avenue should be finished by the end of 2020.

^ That's a 2-for-1 Foster shot!

A few more years, and it could be 3 or 4 in that view.

Yup, that will be a 4-for-1 Foster shot in the coming years. Can't wait.

The back side of this tower looks like a piece of technology or computer equipment, not very pleasant on the eye.

It's definitely different. Only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't match the front of the tower at all. If I saw the front and back and didn't know any better, i'd swear they were two completely different towers...
