VANCOUVER - City on the rise... literally...

Hey all, here are some pics I took yesterday while strolling around town. The weather was a little random and drifted between overcast and sunny but overall it was a pleasant day. The majority of the pics were taken around Yaletown/False Creek but I tried to add a little more variety towards the end. Enjoy.

Wow. I like. I've officially stopped wondering why so many car commercials are shot in Vancouver. It's made for them.

Damn it seems like the cranes never end in Vancouver. Everywhere you look there are cranes. I really like that, a city that seems to have no booms or doldrums, just constant steady developement. Simply amazing.

This is how cities are supposed to look, MASSIVE amounts of people living in nice highrises with balconies to cook and relax. Very impressive, simply put Vancouver gets it.

Thanks for all the skyline shots from views I haven't seen and all the nooks and crannies.

One of my favourites:

I have a question about earthquakes. I kknow the Pacific Northwest does suffer them from time to time (Seattle had a big one a few years ago) and was wondering if Vancouver has strict building codes pertaining to all the glass in its towers. I could imagine the streets of the city becoming a deathtrap in a sizable quake.
Fantastic photos, though.

Vancouver is so great looking. I love the vertical way of living.

What's the approx. average price for a one bedroom condo in a tower?

God I LOVE that city! Glass, glass, and more glass. The skyscrapers there are pretty sweet IMHO.

downtown.....typically:

500sqft = $325,000-375,000 cdn

most units are $600-1000/sqft

most expensive condos in canada are found here.

but you can live outside of the downtown for more normal pricing of $300-500sqft

Thanks - that's a lot but not totally outrageous.

^NOPE...but most units are 700sqft-1200sqft which means 500,000 and up.

also, many newer downtown buildings are pushing into 1500-2000$sqft for views.

Vancouver probably has one of the most unique feels and atmospheres of any city in the world. Great photos.

kinda...kinda really not.

It IS a great city, but pales when looking at most major cities.

argh I would hate to imagine what would happen if there was a megaquake on the cascadia subduction zone. Magnitude 8.0-9.0 along the pacific coast would effect Vancouver, seattle, and portland.

Unknown to most the cascadia subduction zone has larger quakes then the san andreas in california. Word is we are due for a mega quake soon.

The citys building bylaws are very up to date with regards to earthquakes, most of the (glass) buildings were put up after the last big San Fran quake and would withstand most quakes with very minimal damage. The glass should remain attached to the building evelope, there is enougth leeway given for motion. Shaw Tower for instance at the top cannot have satelittes as the building sways as much as 1ft and would lose signal. All new buildings are built to be quite flexible there have been major advancements in concrete, even rebar can now be made of fiberglass. This all being said, there are numerous older building that could receive major damages.
