Nikon D40 would be my suggestion for that price range (its MSRP is $599 USD). I have one (bought the kit that comes with the 18-55mm lense, plus got the 70-300mm as well), and its a very nice camera. Takes nice shots, very easy to handle and well reviewed.

We had a similar thread going over in the Canada area, theres a bunch of links to review sites you may also want to check out as well.

Olympus E-410. The most compact digital SLR you can buy. Great Olympus colour, too

Well, I am a Canon guy, but this deal cannot be beat on the Olympus. Remember, an SLR is just not the body but lenses, and with this kit you get 2 lenses & the body for $609. Not a bad deal at all and plenty of pixels.

Here is a review about the Nikon D40 which is the one I just bought. I was in the same situation and the same budget you have and this helped me on my decision. I ended up buying it and I am so happy with it.
