Princess Auto Update

Went past the new Princess Auto. They are just in the final exterior stages, and, as well, just about ready to pave the parking lot. They are also constructing a new retaining wall in the rear.

Interesting workflow decision to build the rear retaining wall after the building was constructed, maybe the rock turned out to be less stable than they expected.

I can't imagine what motivated them to build that close to the slope in the first place.

More parking space up front?

Seems like Saint John has a problem with building too close to the hills; is there something about the territory that planners aren't getting or what?

What might have been neat would have been to build the store into the rock face. Of course setting up proper evacuation routes with the back and most of the sides sealed in rock would've been a PITA.

The original plans for East Point that I saw some years ago, involved a larger retailer [your guess on who they were targeting] located where Princess Auto now is, and its roof would be equal in height to Retail Drive above it, so that you actually turned right off of Retail Drive to parking located on the top of the retail building. I loved that concept, but it was probably ditched for cost reasons.

If your busy work or home life makes it hard for you to shop during the week, you're in luck.

Common council has passed a change to the by-law which will let businesses decide what hours they want to open on Sundays. That means you could see some retailers opening at 9am instead of 12---although some businesses may choose to keep things the way they are.

Malls will have to make that decision as well. All the retailers will have to abide by the same rules.

The Day of Rest Act was first passed back in 1985. While some object to the idea of more Sunday shopping hours as unnecessary, the Board of Trade has said it could help our flagging local economy, and besides businesses should be able to make that call for themselves.

Saint John changes Sunday shopping rules

Common Council gives third reading to bylaw amendment

SAINT JOHN, N.B.- The city is loosening it’s rules surrounding Sunday shopping.

Common Council has given third reading to a bylaw amendment which will allow retailers to set their own hours on Sunday.

Prior to last night most shops were only allowed to open between noon and 5PM on Sundays.

The bylaw amendment does not apply to stat holidays.

Couple things I noticed last night.

1.) Jack & Jones is closed.

2.) Spencers, and Yeh! Frozen Yogourt is now open.

3.) Wicker Emporium is moving from MDB Plaza, to East Point Shopping.

and 4.) The Princess Auto sign is now up on the building.

They didn't even have a chance to test the market! I wonder if there isn't some type of dispute with mall management.....

I thought the word was when the Quispam location closed, they were going to focus all their efforts on the SJ store and make a full sit-down restaurant. This wasn't that long ago, so I'm wondering if the closure has to do with renovating the restaurant??
