Too bad for Edmonton, this race gave the kind of exposure your city needed. Here's hoping Calgary can come up with something so race fans in E-town can still watch some racing.

There were considerable noise complaint back then.

I lived on Dovercourt Ave back then and you could always tell when they were racing. But Yes we lost a great facility.

Calgary Indy "not likely"

http://www.630ched.com/Channels/Reg/...spx?ID=1306061

Quote:
The chair of Calgary's Finance Committee says an Indy car race would be a "nice to have" but it has to be economically feasible.

This, after the City of Edmonton and Montreal-based Octane Racing Group failed to reach a deal over extra costs associated with running the race.

Alderman Gord Lowe says he would want to take a look at the costs and benefits before committing. He doesn't want the City of Calgary to be used as a bargaining ploy against another city by the race organizer. Lowe says the race would give the city some profile but, he wonders, at what cost.

City has been spinning its wheels on Indy too long
Returns have been dubious, costs outrageous -- near $16M all told

Goodbye, Edmonton Indy. Goodbye, Indy Racing League. Forgive me if I don't shed too many tears as you race off into the sunset.

Forgive me if I don't condemn the city for blowing a deal with Octane Management to run the Indy here next year...

City's actions on Indy unprofessional

Allowing chief financial officer to negotiate with race promoter without reporting to city council has created conspiracy theorists

The body isn't even cold but it's already giving off a curious odour.

Quite frankly, it smells like city council lost interest in having the Edmonton Indy as a summertime staple long before the Montreal based race promoters actually draped the black flag over the Indy Racing League event...

Ziiing.

I don't know what to think about all of this, but I do believe that someone dropped the ball in some way or another. It's quite disappointing that Octane didn't have the chance to prove themselves as I really believe they would have put on a great event. I think the race was mis-managed from the beginning due to a lack of experience in hosting such an event. The right experts should have been hired from the start.

Our City Council acting like a dog & pony show has ensured that the only events we're likely to attract in the future are, well, dog & pony shows.

Still, I think people are overreacting.

"International black eye"?
"How can we bid for Expo if we can't make the Indy work?"

Indy events come and go all the time all over the continent.
Vancouver lost the Indy to us but they just successfully hosted the Olympics.
Toronto Indy is on life support but nobody's going write them off as a city.
Montreal
Edmonton has successfully host the Commonwealth Games, the Worlds, etc. I'm not worried.

^ The only thing that really pisses me off is how I'm hearing the city handled it. Very poor.

^ This. One huge misstep backwards will undo a whole lot of effort put in to changing the external perception of Edmonton.

No wonder it was kept hushhush until after the election.

I don't know. I never did hold much stock in the Indy after the first came around. The ECCA is a piss-poor track for racing - not a lot of opportunities in the track for passing makes for a boring race. We don't have another race track so, well, it doesn't look like it's going to stay.

Wasn't the course change and the paving required the straw that broke the camel's back though? Or was the new course just as limited in passing opportunities?

Are you kidding me?

Don't blame the track, blame the 2 team domination.

Short article:

Council tries to get Indy engine restarted

Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

City council is fighting to keep the Indy alive.

In a meeting Tuesday night, council put forward a motion instructing city administration to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to restart the Indy's engine.

"It instructed the administration to talk to Octane and negotiate as vigorously as possible to allow the Indy to continue," said Bryan Anderson, Ward 9 councillor.

The fate of the IndyCar Racing event has looked grim since negotiations between the city and Octane Racing Group turned sour in late October.

In July, council approved $5.5 million in funding for the Indy over the next three years, as well as $1.5 million in transit and emergency services.

However, the two sides couldn't agree on how to cover an additional $3 million in costs, which arose from the need to move the race to the east side of the City Centre Airport.
