The fourth floor of the existing structure is mostly gone now, looks more like a "de-construction" rather than a demolition.

Large concrete anchors and steel braces are now onsite so support the facade similar to what we saw at the Waterside Centre.

The little building is now pretty well completely gutted out and most of the wooden structure removed, and the steel braces are now pretty well all in place.

My GOD waiting for this TD Expansion to get fully underway is such a tease...

It'll be well worth the wait if the finished product looks like the beautiful renderings -- that's for damn sure!

I'm not sure how long it will take, but the crane for this should look quite nice next to the 3 Citadel cranes.

I think the CBD area will have slightly nicer streetscapes when this and Waterside are done. Now that the Nova Centre is under construction a big swath of the downtown has no surface lots, with the exception of Barrington and George, the north end of Province House (should be landscaped similar to the south end; they could get rid of the parking by putting it underground at Barrington and George), and the small lot next to the Dominion Building. I think this lack of privately-owned surface lots is part of the reason why there's somewhat less construction downtown than there is in "fringe" areas like Cogswell and Clyde that are full of opportunity sites.

The crane can't be too far off now.

Work on the old facade appears to be done and excavation has begun.

Lordy... hardly seems worth preserving what's left of the heritage building.

I assume that the parts that have been dismantled will be reattached, and that there will be some degree of restoration.

Yea, really eh. Well I guess this just goes to show they're committed to doing a good job, and willing to spend the money to do it that way instead of tearing it all down..? lol

Can someone re-post the most recent renderings for this?
If memory serves me correct there were at least two different renderings for this site but something to do with the roof has changed?

I think the following document was probably posted previously but it is interesting in that it gives a fairly detailed description of the plans for the Macara Barnstead Building - http://www.halifax.ca/boardscom/hac/...ttachments.pdf. The date on the drawings is from July 2011. In reality, it is more of a demolition than a restoration.

What you see in Jonovision's photo is about all of the original that will remain. The facade will be restored with new materials to match the original. Although it is sad to see the original material lost, once wood rots out there isn't much that can be done to restore it.

Looks like the crane for this one may be a week away.....

This will have the the biggest impact on the downtown skyline since the Aliant extension.

This would be the perfect site to use a Luffing Jib Tower Crane. I would not be surprised if we see one here before christmas!!
