I'm not so sure about that. The site is large, but not unusually large for an office building. It's smaller than most sites on the west side, and even Bofa didn't get the level of attention this is getting. I'm leaning more towards the rareness of such a site in the Grand Central district, which rarely sees major new construction. Just wait until it gets 100 foot or so. You'll see even more people looking up. As they should.

Why would NIMBY's claim any foothold in this part of the City? Unless I'm wrong, the entirety of Midtown East is practically 100% business dedicated.

And this tower will surely detract from the looming dominance of MetLife/PanAm at street level from Park.

Imagine, then, if this were the one to stand behind the wonderful Helmsley building instead...

The Pan Am is a brutalist masterpiece. Anybody who says otherwise can take a hike. Vanderbilt will never overshadow the pure power and majesty of that concrete crusted old beauty. When it was first unveiled, it was a phenomenal building that took your breath away. It has lost its luster but the mere presense of the young pup next door will never truly impinge upon the immense power and majesty that it thrusts on to the visual axes of Park Avenue.

NIMBYism is a low level mental disorder. The context nor location is relevant - a cause will be found and if not, it will be constructed.

NIMBYs are everywhere. They came out against this project, they feel the area is already crowded, not enough services, etc. So much so that this project and the entire midtown east rezoning was dropped under Bloomberg. When Deblasio came in, this specific piece of the rezoning was carved out to get the project moving (along with a few neighboring plots). The rest of the rezoning came later.

Anyway, here's an older shot of the site from above, in relation to its surroundings..

Rumor has it, it's being pushed back to March 11, 2018.

But it's supposed to be ready by 2020-2021.

When you think about the size, this thing is hauling big time! Glory to the motherland city.

One Vanderbilt’s steel superstructure finally rises above ground

Quote:
The steel superstructure for what will eventually be NYC’s second tallest tower is now going up, new construction site photos by NyConstructionPhoto have revealed. Eventually this office tower will stand 1,401-feet tall, and have an observation deck located over 1,000 feet above ground—one of the highest in the city.

Following a groundbreaking ceremony for the building last year, construction at the site has been humming right along. Foundation work got underway in February this year, and developer SL Green announced shortly afterward that the building would start going vertical in May.

The first steel column for the structure was erected in June, and one of the cranes that lift the thousands of tons of steel and concrete arrived on site in August. Last month, the developer offered us a peek at a mock up of what the building’s glass and terra cotta facade will look like. The building’s Instagram account is pretty active, and it’s the place to go if you want the latest construction updates on the project.

This Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed supertall is scheduled for completion in 2020.

I believe the point was brought up somewhere else (IDK if it was this thread precisely) that the pace of development at Manhattan East is to beat NIMBY's to the punch as to claiming why such-and-such parcel isn't good for developing.

This, being the anchor tower of the area, is obviouslt exempt from such concerns; but the 800-footer close by is another example of planning proactivity.

The building's boundaries are really taking shape now:

Unfortunately, someone recently scratched up most of the sidewalk-viewing windows, from the inside:

Nope, you're talking about the neighborhood along the east river, outside the boundaries of the east midtown rezoning. The east midtown rezoning is already in place for these towers.
