re: St Claude streetcar
I had read that this was being considered but didn't realize that the RTA had actually applied for funding.Making sure that the Marigny/Bywater continues to grow will actually be good for the city by reinforcing a solid younger tax base who finds uptown a little too stuffy. With a street car line along St Claude the idea of the New Marigny might not seem so con like as well. They do need a real grocery in that area though.Roberts is just sitting there as a reminder.I wish the circle foods store would be sold and turned into a mini whole foods or something that would attract customers from the surrounding areas.Thats asking a lot but who knows,i've been pretty surprised by the what has been happening in the last year.

That definitely could be it. The article says they are planning 180 units. Not sure if that makes a difference.

The whole plan looks really nice and will definitely help upgrade this little area of the city.

Just a general question...I know for years now there has been talk about some form or rail rapid transit from the airport to the CBD, has there been any serious developments about this project?

The Iberville Projects is 858 units, and the city has submitted requests for federal grants to redevelop the site. Could it be them trying to get a price quote, while leaving a few of the buildings alone? Possible?

Blitzen you are right thats it! Because it says the project is in very early stages. I just couldnt think of anywhere that had 819 units but Iberville does and they want to do a shopping center too so yes this is it. Thanks.

All I remember is that it was supposed to generally run along Earhart Blvd and then the insterstate to arrive at Union Passenger Terminal.

Drove by the VA hospital site. Ton of work going on. Number of lots cleared is increasing rapidly. Also saw workers inside Pan-Am building and the office building on Canal st. adjacent to the Pan-Am building being demolished. LSU side has minimal work only, overall very quiet.

No.

It's likely that within the decade, we'll probably set up some form of Amtrak line to Baton Rouge. That line would run very close to the airport, so it would be fairly easy to build a new station with a shuttle-bus connection or a long bridge to the terminals. This is what they have in Milwaukee and Providence, and probably lots of other cities.

Ray Nagin's role in trying to develop giant hobbled power plant is disputed
Sunday, November 14, 2010, 7:30 AM

The Market Street power plant has long been considered one of the city's choicest pieces of real estate.
...
"The deal from Baltimore for acquisition is from the Cordish Group," it says. "The father, David Cordish, is flying to New Orleans next Thursday and wants to meet with Samuel, Fisher, Broadhurst, and the mayor. This is a meeting to ink a deal as approximately one year ago, Samuel, Mayor Nagin and Bill Broadhurst flew to Baltimore and structured a tentative joint venture. Time has passed and we now have a new mayor that will be introduced into the equation on Friday."
...
It's easy to see why Market Street's developers might have wanted to woo Nagin. Redeveloping the power plant would require approvals from a maze of city and state agencies with authority over development, tax policies, traffic, historic buildings, the port, the river and the Public Belt Railroad.

Moving forward would also surely require a major environmental cleanup. The building once burned coal and is on the site of a former paint factory. It is believed to have lead and other toxic chemicals in the soil.
...
The Market Street project, meanwhile, languished. On May 28, 2009, Samuel resigned as managing member of Market Street, and a group of disgruntled investors assumed control.

That group, called NOLA Development Partners, promises that something is finally going to happen at the site. They say they expect to announce a retail anchor for the project soon.
Very, very convoluted history, with the usual side of shady deals. I'm so glad Ray Ray is gone. I'm also glad the Cordish deal didn't go through. Cordish's urban renewal projects are extremely tacky at best. They give to to other, sleepier cities what New Orleans already has in the form of the French Quarter. Their brand of festival marketplace would be another failure on the order of the Riverwalk. Can you imagine "New Orleans Live!" (exclamation mark included)? We have enough postmodern urban tackiness in New Orleans.

What we need instead is another Canal Place - not a place for tourists or entertainment, but just a classy, dynamic mixed-use neighborhood with a significant amount of major retail. It's my understanding that this is what NOLA Development Partners is seeking (Michael Ullian, the man mentioned in previous articles, is leading that group).

New reception hall planned for sleepy stretch of City Park

The hall, tentatively called The Arbor Room at Popp Fountain, is coming on the heels of several other projects and renovations that the park has overseen along Zachary Taylor Drive since the storm.

The Arbor Room will join nearby City Bark, the $650,000 dog park that debuted in March; a $3.5 million, 26-court tennis complex nearing completion to the north along Marconi Drive; and the adjacent 1930s-era fountain that was refurbished by volunteers after the flood.

Adding to the renaissance is the overhaul that took place about a half-mile to the east at Pan American Stadium, another casualty of the storm.

When the reception hall opens next summer, park officials say they look forward to further energizing what had been an isolated, underused area.

Cool idea for the reception hall. The area of the park north of the Interstate has been underused for years, so its nice to see it finally getting some attention. Im sure this hall will be very busy place for weddings etc.

I've seen the plans for the Popp Fountain Pavilion... it will be sort of a cross between a tent and a building. A kitchen on one side and a bathroom on the other side will be two traditional buildings, while the big central hall will be a fabric structure. It's kind of a cool idea. It should look fairly elegant when it's done, although the massive HVAC unit on the roof might be kind of ugly.
