Basketball Training Facility - Under Construction

http://www.runninutes.com/program/training_center.html

$36 million facility scheduled to open in the fall of 2015

Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center - The new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center is scheduled to open in August of 2015 northeast of the Huntsman Center arena. The $36-million project also includes a state-of-the-art Utah Athletics Performance Center, which will be located northwest of the arena, and encompasses 80,000-square feet of space.

“This is a major basketball facility that will give us everything we need to be successful,’’ said Utah athletics director Chris Hill. “It’s fantastic.”

The three-story Huntsman Basketball Center will include dedicated practice gymnasiums for the both men’s and women’s basketball teams. The gyms will include viewing balconies and on-site sports medicine facilities equipped with treatment and taping tables, stem machines, sports drink and supplement dispensers, and ice machines.

The men’s and women’s teams will move into new locker rooms—which will include plunge pools—film rooms, and player lounges. There will also be an expansive Hall of Fame area in the building’s atrium and a shared dining room. A new and expanded team laundry and equipment facility will also be part of the project.

The coaching and support staffs for both programs will have their own floor of spacious offices, meeting rooms and recruiting lounges. A large observation deck will be placed on top of the building for team and alumni functions, providing sweeping views of the Wasatch Mountain range, the University of Utah campus, and downtown Salt Lake City.

“We already have the finest [game] facility in the Pac-12 and by the time we finish the additions with this basketball center, no university in America is going to be able to challenge us as far as the wonderful facilities,” said Jon Huntsman, whose name has graced the U. arena for the past 30 years after a major donation. “We’re excited about the Runnin’ Utes for the next many years and we’re going to make this facility, added to the Huntsman Center, the best in America. It’s a community effort.”

Noorda Oral Health Sciences Center - Newly Completed

Recently completed, the new Ray and Tye Noorda Oral Health Sciences Building establishes a new School of Dentistry for the University of Utah and provides an educational paradigm for
the campus by uniting health sciences and dental programs. Kahler Slater teamed with MHTN Architects to design a building which focuses on creating the ideal patient care experience.

The new School of Dentistry building contains operatories in public dental clinics, clinic support labs and spaces, lecture halls and conference/seminar rooms, faculty offices, research labs and
general building support spaces. Although initially planned for 50 students per year for four years (200 total students), it has capacity for program growth to 60 students per year (240
total students). Due to the location on the University's campus, the Oral Health Sciences Building allows for integration and collaboration with other health sciences programs, providing
opportunities for interdisciplinary care.

Rio Tinto Kennecott Building - School Of Mechanical Engineering - Newly Completed

In light of findings of a commissioned study regarding the deficiencies of the existing building, a decision was reached to pursue a renovation and expansion of the Kennecott Building
(circa 1955), located on the corner of 1st South and North Campus Drive. The construction of the initial phases was completed in 2013, and Phase 2 is now newly completed.

Phase 2 fully renovates and greatly expands the East and North wings of the building, and includes an exciting new 3 story atrium space, a new large classroom, as well as student labs, faculty
offices, administrative areas, support spaces and a cafe. The aesthetic of this project includes exposing much of the infrastructure and systems of the building to promote natural
experiential learning by the mechanical engineering students that use the facility.
This phased building renovation and expansion will begin to fill the need The College of Engineering has for facilities to house their growing academic and research programs. More
significant renovation and expansion phases are planned for the future.

The Lassonde Center - Under Construction

Live Construction Web Cam Link: http://lassonde.utah.edu/studios/image-gallery/webcam/

About Lassonde Studios - Article by Marco Rinaldi, with permalink: http://aasarchitecture.com/2014/10/u...lding-eda.html

Get ready for the Lassonde Studios. Opening in fall 2016, the facility will merge 400 unique residences with a 20,000-square-foot “garage” for all students to attend events, build prototypes, enter competitions, launch their futures — or just hang out. The facility will be the hub for innovators, "makers" and entrepreneurs

http://lassonde.utah.edu/studios/

In conjunction with the groundbreaking, the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute released new details about the building, including living options (modular pod, loft and traditional), elaborate architectural renderings and amenities in the garage. The Lassonde Studios is designed to be as innovative as the students and activities that will be inside.

The Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute is working with an internationally recognized architectural and design team to create a space that will define a new type of university environment and inspire entrepreneurs for decades to come. Partner companies include EDA Architects (Salt Lake City), Cannon Design (global) and ARUP (global). Gramoll Construction (Salt Lake City) is the general contractor.

The heart of the Lassonde Studios will be the garage on the first floor. It will be a mostly open space with moveable furniture to accommodate a wide range of activities. It will feature co-working space, private offices for startups, a cafe, lounge space and a prototyping area with 3-D printers, sewing machines, hand tools, laser cutter and more.

Any student at the University of Utah will be welcome to use the garage. It will function like a student union for entrepreneurs and innovators. The four floors above the garage will provide three types of housing as well as additional co-working, study and maker space. The living options include:

- Moveable living pods: Designers invented this type of housing exclusively for the Lassonde Studios. The pods will be 7-by-7 foot, private living areas with beds, shelving and storage. The pods will be moveable within a larger, multi-use suite. Each suite will contain bathrooms, a kitchen and community maker space.

- Loft rooms: Groups of students will be able to live together in a large, open space where they share creative space and a kitchen. These rooms will provide students with an urban lifestyle in the middle of campus.

- Single and double rooms: Students can choose standard rooms for individuals or to share with one other person. Groups of these single and double rooms will share creative space and kitchens.

Crocker Science Center

The Crocker Science Center is a redevelopment of one of the jewels
of President’s Circle, converting the George Thomas Building into a
state of the art teaching and research center. The original U shaped
portion of the building consisting of approximately 71,000 s.f. will
receive a seismic upgrade and reconfiguration of spaces with an
eye to preservation of the exterior, key spaces and components of
the interior.

The 13,200 s.f. of infill space at the south of the building that once
served as the library stacks will be demolished and a 52,500 s.f.
addition built in its place. This addition will hold the Cell and
Genome Research Center labs. There is a hope that the research
and teaching functions will blend and not feel like two separate
buildings.

START DATE: Anticipated construction start: May 2015

COMPLETION DATE: Anticipated opening: Fall 2016

http://facilities.utah.edu/projects/crocker.php

While preserving the historic, Art Deco exterior of the George Thomas Building, the Crocker Science Center will feature modern
architectural features, LEED certification, and a full earthquake retrofit.

Design Features:

Pending approval, the project will begin full design in May of 2014,
however the major design features will involve respectful restoration
of key spaces and an exterior treatment of the addition that will
respect the existing character of the original George Thomas
Building

Every student can benefit from tutoring, and a centralized, modern tutoring center will provide students with a one-stop resource for extra help and assistance in all of
their classes.

A café located between the historic reading room and common spaces will provide a respite for students to grab food, drinks, and a place to relax
and socialize.

Conceived as the visual centerpiece to the Crocker Science Center, the atrium will also be a main thoroughfare for students and faculty to meet and talk
between classes.

Huntsman Cancer Institute Expansion - Under Construction

Deseret News Images - Huntsman Cancer Institute addition rendering

The 220,000 sq. ft. expansion was announced by Huntsman at the annual fundraising gala last November. With Architectural Nexus as the architect and Jacobsen Construction as the builder,
the addition is slated for completion in 2016 and will double HCI's research space.

Principal support for the $105 million expansion will be provided by the Jon M. Huntsman Family, Huntsman Cancer Foundation, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
Intermountain Healthcare, and the State of Utah. In all, more than 100,000 individuals have supported Huntsman Cancer Institute. The addition's name (The Primary Children's and Families'
Cancer Research Center at Huntsman Cancer Institute) reflects the LDS Church's financial support of the expansion and its historical emphasis on children and families.

"When we dedicated the first phase of Huntsman Cancer Institute in 1999, I told everyone it was just the beginning. That vision-which many viewed as impossible-is now coming true; a
cancer treatment and research campus unparalleled in the world. Here we'll make the kind of research advances that will truly make a difference to the human family," Jon M. Huntsman
said.

The addition's projected laboratories will bring the actual linear footage of research bench space to almost a mile. Other research enhancements will include a Biotechnology Center with the
latest advanced genetic sequencing and imaging equipment.

"By bringing together the most innovative scientific minds with leading edge technologies, we will accelerate cancer research discovery to reduce the burden of cancer. Just down the hall from
our cancer hospital, teams of top scientists will be tackling the most pressing medical challenge of our time," said Dr. Mary Beckerle, HCI's CEO and director. "The Huntsmans and our other
generous supporters have given all of us a tremendous gift, and it is now up to us to capitalize on this unique opportunity."...

Below pictured, earlier Phase completed in 2011 was awarded Healthcare Building Project of the Year, 2011. This project was an expansion to Huntsman Cancer Hospital IIA (which was Project
of the Year in 2004). This was also a surprise to Jon Erdmann, he did not think that the expansion would win an awards since it was adding onto an awards winning building (Surprise).

Business Loop Parking Garage - Under Construction

There are certain areas on campus that would benefit from more concentrated parking options. To address this, two new parking garages are under way.

The business loop parking garage, which is being built on top of the current business loop parking lot, will be the first parking garage on main campus. The garage broke ground in mid-July
2014 and will be available for use near the end of Spring 2015. This garage will house 810 parking spaces that will be able to serve the needs of students, staff and faculty during the day
and provide much-needed parking for events at the Huntsman Center and Rice-Eccles Stadium in the evenings and on weekends.

"In addition to providing more parking spaces, the structure is built with a reinforced roof that allows it to also serve as a play field. The field will be lit for
evening use and will have rails and nets around it."

http://fyi.utah.edu/issues/aug-18-co...ory_27021.html

http://fyi.utah.edu/issues/aug-18-co...ory_27021.html

Approximately 810 stalls (net approximately 560 stalls).

•Play field on the roof.

•Scheduled for completion in April 2015, and the field will be ready for the fall 2015 school year.

•A new shuttle route will transport commuters from the lot on Guardsman Way to the business loop.

•Electric vehicle charging stations will be available at each level in the garage.

Northwest Parking Garage - Under Construction

The surface parking lot between the Sutton Geology and Naval Sciences buildings will be the home of the second parking garage on lower campus. This smaller parking garage will help provide more parking near Presidents Circle.

The garage will hold 310 parking stalls and will help with faculty and staff parking during the day as well as provide parking for the many special events that are housed in and around Presidents Circle in the evenings and on weekends.

Construction started this past fall and will be finished in time for school in August 2015.

Northwest Parking Garage at a glance:

•Approximately 310 stalls (net approximately 220 spaces).

•Scheduled for completion in August 2015.

•Electric vehicle charging stations will be available in the garage.

a good overview of the design/layout. In the next month we should have complete renderings, which will include the materials/skins and other design related details. Many details that
will warm up our design are still forth coming. AUC will project high energy at street-level, yet will be warm and inviting when completed (details are not yet shown in these preliminary
renderings).

Special thanks going out to our Architects/IBI, who I believe have done an amazing job at coming up with an original and beautiful design for AUC!

We are very close to having all of the pieces to get AUC underway ...

The Eccles Theater is still a year away from completion, but the impact of the theater on the downtown area can already be felt. The theater provides multiple access points to Main and Regent Streets, and three-floors of glass walls that open up to Main Street and the downtown skyline. The Eccles theater includes a 2,500-seat main hall, a third-floor terrace, patron and VIP lounge areas, black box theater, rehearsal space and several public gathering spaces.

Construction on the Eccles Theater and the adjacent 111 Main, will be completed late summer of 2016. The theater will share a lobby with the 24-story, 111 Main office tower. The theater will have a soft opening early fall of 2016, with the first show expected November of next year.

City unveils new plans for downtown Regent Street by 111 Tower & EPAC Theater

Jason Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...y-theater.html

Becker and other city administrators unveiled the new schematic design plans for the Regent Street block located on the east side of the new Eccles Theater, between 100 South and
200 South.

Artist rendering of view from 200 South of proposed Regent Street redevelopment project aimed at making the mid-block connector between City Creek and
the Gallivan Center a place to “gather, discover and connect.” (Salt Lake City)

The project would include retail and dining establishments, a public plaza, along with custom landscape architecture throughout the common areas. While the street would still be
accessed by motor vehicle traffic, the area would also be accessible to pedestrians and could be converted to pedestrian-only access for events such as concerts, Becker explained.

“Since I took office, a primary object is to make downtown a gathering place for the region — and have it be a true welcoming environment for people seeking all kinds of activities that you
can really only find in the downtown area,” he said. “We see this as part of what we are doing to make this the 'cultural core' of the region.”...

...The redevelopment project is aimed at attracting more people into downtown and generating a distinctive experience that can’t happen anywhere else, said STRUCK agency's Brent Watts,
who is part of the creative design team for the Regent Street project.

“We want to create a 'branded' experience,” he said, adding that besides gathering and dining, the corridor will include local artists and local shops.

“We want sizeable, small-scale retail shops on the street,” Watts said. “That’s important.”...

63 East Center - Under Construction

63 Center Street is a six-story, mixed-use development consisting of approximately 7,000 sf of retail on the first floor and 41 loft style apartments on the five floors above. Our inspiration for the design came from both the architecture and beauty of New York City's Park Avenue in addition to some of our neighboring developments, namely the Wells Fargo and Zion's Bank buildings respectively. We believe the use and design of this proposed development perfectly aligns with the City's "lively urban character" vision of downtown Provo, while also providing a "pedestrian- oriented, retail and dining storefront environment."

PROVO -- A bit of Southern comfort is coming to downtown Provo with the announcement that Forge Companies will house the Red Bean Bistro on the main floor of its premier building, Sixty-Three East in downtown Provo.

The building, currently under construction at 63 E. Center St., will feature upscale apartment living with the restaurant on the main floor. A walk-through lobby to the Wells Fargo Bank parking terrace will also be a part of the main floor.

Forge has entered an agreement with Green Light Hospitality LLC, the same group that owns the Chef's Table restaurant in Provo, to provide a Pritchard signature restaurant at the mixed-use development.

"It's world-class sophistication meets Southern hospitality," Chef Pritchard said.

Pritchard, the owner of Red Bean Bistro, is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute and said he has a love and passion for classical fine dining.

The restaurant will take up all 7,000 square feet of street-level retail space. It will seat 175, including seasonal outdoor dining, and features a reasonably priced menu with entrees ranging between $10 and $15.

"This unique restaurant transforms Southern comfort food into a wowing culinary experience," said Ryan Freeman, chief executive officer of Forge Companies.

Freeman said both Forge and Green Light Hospitality are excited to bring something new and exciting to downtown Provo.

"The Red Bean Bistro will be synonymous with excellence and passion, and as such is a perfect fit for a high-caliber development like Sixty-Three," Freeman said.

Hello all,

Here is a link to my Photo Walk thread if you are interested.
The photos are mostly shots of the buildings from different angles.

Also just an FYI, there were quite a few people in the downtown and surrounding area, but I tried to take photos without them in the shots.
Just so you know, the city was not a ghost town...
