London has deserved a building this beautiful and iconic for a long time. That spire looks badass, like it might cut you just by looking at it. Congratulations London, can't wait to see it in person. The world just needs more sexy pyramidal buildings in general.

A true wonder

Congrats to London from Paris.
This tower is a true wonder and the City of London clearly the most interesting in Europe.
Wish we could follow you but that's impossible for everyone here (at least the decision-maker) want to keep Paris as a Museum. In 1889 Eiffel had to fight to build his tower. People said at that time that it would ruin Paris. No we still face the same kind of people who are against big projects...for the same reason.
As the builder mentioned it, this tower puts London on the map and gives to London, along with Canary Wharf and the City a really good looking skyline. I cross my fingers that the Pinnacle get built soon ! I also cross my fingers that it will push other European cities to compete.

It is great for London to have a structure that not only stands out from clutter of small buildings. I hope that more 1000ft buildings can go up in London - this city needs more stunning skyscrapers like the Shard. I would propose a tower of London like the CNN Tower being 1900-2000ft tall - imagine the views from that! It will be a instant financial success - some on Boris

It's funny how the Shard totally dominates in London, whereas in Manhattan a tower of similar height (One57 f.e.) barely stands out in the skyline.

How many more people are going to try and make that point? It really comes across as trolling. It's irrelevant how this would stand out in NYC or anywhere else outside of where it is, for that matter. So, get off that point.

Trolling? Hardly. It was just an observation based on the previous vid and some pictures. The tower per se is quite elegant and classy, I like it a lot.

Wow, the Cheese Grader and Walkie Talkie buildings really help complete an amazing skyline. Great angle, chest.

not quite complete colemonkee - looking forward to the next tower to rise - Lime Street Square - (would show infront of the Gherkin in this pic) here - kind of shaped like a pointy ice berg - about 192m tall - 630ft.

When will this thread be moved to the Completed Project Threads Archive? The tower has been completed for about a year now.

Did anyone else hear about the six women climbing the tower? I think they did it to raise awareness on oil drilling

Environmental activists scale London's Shard tower

LONDON (AP) -- Six environmental activists scaled Western Europe's tallest building on Thursday to protest drilling in the Arctic by oil companies — and were arrested after reaching the top.

It took the female climbers 15 hours to reach the top of the 310-meter (1,017-foot) tower on the south bank of the River Thames in London.

Once they reached the summit, two of the activists unfurled a flag which read "Save the Arctic."

Shortly after, London police, who had been on the scene since dawn monitoring the situation, said the six protesters were arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass.

John Sauven, executive director of Greenpeace U.K., said it was an honor to witness their "remarkable achievement" in the name of protecting the Arctic.

Greenpeace said the climbers were from Britain, Canada, Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium.

It said the Renzo Piano-designed 72-story Shard had been chosen because it looms over the London offices of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, which has drilled for oil in the Arctic Sea off Alaska.

The skyscraper, which opened earlier this year, was kept open throughout the climb.
