No, there isn't any generally agreed measure of 'Metro Areas', definitely nothing that is comparable with US MSAs. The closest you might get to that is maybe the EU 'LUZ' definitions, but again they are not strictly comparable.

This would also be true to lesser extent on the western boundary, with hundreds of thousands of ethnic Germans moving from modern-day France and Belgium after WW2.

@Jonesy55, btw is there an agreed upon definition of the metropolitan area sizes and populations of the major cities in the UK? For example, the "London Commuter Belt." Is that an official designation of the size of London's metro area versus the BUA?

Not that I've had any experience personally with attempting to apply for a country's citizenship that way, but I've always been confused when countries claim that you can get citizenship by blood alone, like those European and Old World countries who claim their diasporas can get special treatment this way.

Is there any limit to the number of generations removed from Germany an ethnic German can claim to "return" to get citizenship?

Can ethnic Germans from France or Eastern Europe get German citizenship even if their family or ancestors had not set foot in the modern boundaries of Germany for hundreds of years? What about German-Americans, living in say Texas or Wisconsin, with a German surname who speak no German, desiring to get German citizenship?

Or is it like Israel's citizenship rule with the Jewish diaspora where the entire diaspora has birthright?

I guess I should clarify in the case of Germany as there are at least two sets of figures that can be used -- the ones that I used in this thread are of foreign citizens and their place of birth. If we were to include those with an ethnic German (or part-ethnic German) "migrant" background the figure for foreign migrants would increase to 19.3 million in Germany as of 2017.

According to Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) roughly 51% of the (19.3 Million) population with a migrant background were Germans, while about 49% were foreigners. The figures I used are basically of those without a German migrant background.

Ethnic Germans after WW2/Cold War, living in former German territory or former German settlements outside national boundaries, pretty much had a free pass to German citizenship.

But it isn't like they chose to move to modern-day Germany. They were mass-deported often under threat of death. They were postwar refugees.

Post-Cold War was obviously a bit different, with the remaining ethnic Germans choosing a more prosperous/democratic environment. Germany had more lenient rules back then, and a greater demographic crisis.

Nowadays you can't do it unless you have one German citizen parent. But there are barely any Germans left in Eastern Europe. The few that remained integrated with the majority (often hiding their background in the postwar years).

Same rules for Germans in the Americas. Unless you have a German citizen parent, you're probably out of luck these days.

It's been a minute but it's not over yet!

Back to the United States we go to explore metro area's that we haven't yet...

Kicking things off we head to Indiana to the state's largest...

*Disclaimer: all of the following statistics are based on the US Census's American Community Survey (ACS) 2013-2017 5-year estimates. The ranking may not be 100% accurate as the countries and places of birth are limited to roughly 110 of all of the major countries and places of birth in the World. For example, some metro's receive measurable amounts of immigrants annually from places like the Congo, Togo, Bhutan, Burundi, Cote d'Ivoire, Georgia (Republic), The Gambia, Guinea, Kosovo, Senegal, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Micronesia and so on that are not listed in the ACS. Some metro's also have measurable amounts of migrants from US Territories beyond Puerto Rico like the US Virgin Islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa -- and they are also not listed on the ACS for metro areas.

Thank you for your Sweden post Ilcapo!

We're going to switch things up a little before diving back into foreign born places of birth or citizenship...

Today, we're going to explore Ancestries, Races, Tribes and Ethnicities -- kicking things off we'll be heading back to Australia!

I could not find any information about Ancestry alone (meaning of people not mixed with one or more ancestries) but this should give you an idea of Australia's Diversity...

According to Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) roughly 51% of the (19.3 Million) population with a migrant background were Germans, while about 49% were foreigners. The figures I used are basically of those without a German migrant background.
It seems you've got a few things mixed up here - there's no 'ethnicity' dimension to any of these definitions, strictly speaking. The data you've been quoting for German cities refers only to foreign nationals, who are naturally only a subset of the total immigrant or foreign-born population. As a result, the figures can't be directly compared to those for other countries, as they exclude several million naturalised immigrants and don't really reflect the actual composition of the immigrant stock either (naturalisation rates differ tremendously between immigrants from different countries). Likewise, "German" in the broader immigrant definition you're referring to above refers to persons with an immigrant background who are German citizens (this includes, say, naturalised Romanian, Turkish or Vietnamese immigrants as well as those who immigrated from post-Communist states based on German ancestry from the late 1980s onwards). Ethnic Germans who resettled to Germany after WW2 aren't included in any German immigrant statistics, nor are German citizens born abroad.
