hkskyline's 2017 in Toronto

Back when there was little civic unity between Toronto's various mayors, they were in competition to lure business out of the downtown core. Mayor Mel Lastman's answer in North York was to build up along Yonge Street. Although there are office towers, this new downtown has become an expensive residential area instead.

Nice pictures. Does this area have a name, if the whole part of Toronto is called North York? Is this Downtown North York or something?

North York Centre, although the original neighbourhood name is Willowdale.

I remember as a child shopping with my mom at the long-gone No Frills at Yonge/Finch. In later years there was a Future Shop just north thereof (where the Shoppers is now). 20+ years ago, I worked at the McDs at 5200. There was also a German deli called Justus, which we frequented in the '80s and early-'90s. All part of history now.

How much of all of this existed a decade ago? How was this part of the city in the 90s?

Housing in apartment building is cheap in North America and only poor people live in it.

Guessing average might cost USD 100K around.

It's important to remember that there isn't any one thing that applies to "North America" as things vary greatly by region. There tend to be differences between Canada and the US, and even bigger differences between large successful cities and other places.

It would actually be rare to find a condo that cheap in Toronto let alone it be the average. Condos are rarely bought by poor people in Toronto. They're less expensive generally than houses but still firmly middle-class. Most poor people can't afford to buy in the city and instead rent.

North York Centre was pretty built-up with hi-rise development (in the 20-25 storey range) by the mid 1980s, although over the last ten years the area has exploded with dozens of new, much taller towers.

Not in Toronto, it's commonplace for well-to-do people in the city to live in condos, and the average condo price in the city has just passed $500,000 CAD.

I sure wish your version of North America actually existed.

Nice tour.

I was looking for an investment property in that neighbourhood and I would sweep a whole floor if they were at those prices ... haha ... I probably need 4x that for a 1-bedroom or 1+1 den.

You can look up listings here to get an idea of the prices : https://www.realtor.ca/

Those pics look amazing.

I haven't been to Toronto in ten years, I'm guessing it's changed a bit huh?

The streetcars are not running due to construction, so I rode a bus instead to Humber Bay for a view of the skyline from afar. I was not disappointed.

I've always been intrigued by that neighborhood. The way the highrises push up against the Gardiner Expressway, especially at that one curve, it reminded me of pictures I've seen of Tokyo or Hong Kong.

The Danforth was laid in 1799 and is named after the contractor who built it. Stretching east to west with a subway line underneath, the area is home to a large Greek community. The Greeks first came to work in agriculture or in Northern Ontario's mines, forests, and railways. The population gradually grew after World War II and settled in this area in the 1950s.

The side streets leading from the Danforth are mostly low-rise residentials.

Located on Broadview Avenue south of the Danforth, Riverdale Park offers a good view of the skyline.

At Broadview and Gerrard, Chinatown East has lost some of its lustre as the original residents cashed in on rising property prices to move further north and east. Chinese and Vietnamese started settling here in the 1970s, looking for cheaper rent from the main Chinatown on Spadina Avenue.
