Appalling. Can this trend be mitigated? Or does Canada have to become a nation of WAL-MARTs too?

And for some reason the COnservatives have doubled the duty free expenditures, i really dont understand how that is suppose to help the Canadian economy.

It helps the Canadian consumer get more for their dollar, which increases the standard of living.

It also serves notice to local companies. Get competitive or get lost.

Seriously? For generations, Canadians have been able to bring back only a FRACTION of what US consumers have been permitted to bring into the US from all over the world.

Don't tell me that this is some mindless conservative plan to decimate retailers.

Instead, tell me why I should support needlessly higher prices here AND much poorer selection.

Good luck with that.

The duty free allowance for Canadians is absurdly low. $750 maximum, no matter how long.

Japan is the equivalent of about $3000~

Cross border shopping is still worth it for Canadians who travel to the USA, our dollar may be on par, but the pricing is still a huge disparity.

Well maybe if Canada was an island nation as well cross border shopping would not be such a threat to our economy.

I personally have never enjoyed going down to the states just to shop, seems like a waste of time for me, and I have never enjoyed crossing the border anyways, so the extra stress involved really makes it not worth it. Along with other aspects as well (for example read the differences in trans fat from American products to Canadian ones, will make your head spin).

I do consider it a success if I only gain 1 pound per day in America. Though, a personal horror story, I was in Las Vegas from the 27th of April - May 1st and came home 13 pounds heavier. Luckily it was all water from the box of table salt in each and every dish. But yes, going to America is... troublesome. However, when talking about being worthwhile for shopping, I really am referencing only high end items. If the difference is $2 - $3 like most "small" things, well F that. However, in the high end the difference can be hundreds and even thousands depending on the item.

But, even for items people traditionally buy, like clothing, the difference is quite huge.

Looking forward to going South to catch a Baseball game in Seattle, pick up some new performance tires for 1/2 price and 30% off for a camera lens.
Only wish I had a bigger gas tank to fill up.

Well, that's consistent with the Abbarch renos for eatons with the suburbanization of the modernist facade - by adding the "oversized frames".

In today's National Post:

Sears to downsize large chunk of Canada stake

Retail watchers believe, however, that the Sears Holdings move opens more doors for players eager to enter the Canadian market. Nordstrom is said to be close to signing a deal for three Canadian outlets, including the flagship Sears Canada store in Vancouver. Sears Canada sold it back to landlord Cadillac Fairview in March, along with two other large but underproductive stores in Calgary and Ottawa, for $170-million.

Hand drawn elevation? That must be months old.

There are full renderings now and it has changed a lot since the original concepts. Just to kill any craziness early this will not be a ground breaking design, just a clean crisp renovation of the existing structure. It wont win any design awards but it will look worlds better than what currently exists.

I just really hope they picked up the cue set by nearly every other business along Granville and have some decent lighting effects / signs and or screens placed along the Granville / Robson sides of the project.

Seeing how our stadium "entertainment" district is turning into a bedroom community, this area truly is our last heaven for such aspects in our city.

It was a non-CAD architectural rendering.

For all intent and purposes, they could have put up a picture of a new building at Broadway Tech and I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.
