An Hour in Indy

As my vacation time diminished, and the weather continued its Jekyll & Hyde trend, I had to measure my city visits. I stayed in Indianapolis for about an hour until the rain threat became reality. Even though it was a brief visit I did enjoy my time there. I hadn't been to Indy in over 25 years. It was quite a pleasant surprise to see how much the downtown had livened up. Great stuff. I must get back that way before another 25 years pass.

There was a Firemen's convention going on that day. And since the Indy 500 was yesterday I thought this was a good time to post.

Nice tour. I've always liked downtown Indy, it's got a nice stately feel to it.

Someone needs to buy that awful anonymous slab of a Marriott a ticket to Las Vegas, because it is woefully out of place in Indianapolis.

Reinforces my belief that the best part of Indy is it's downtown.

Great pics. Indy has some nice ones. It seems like they have a decent downtown.

Indianapolis does have a great downtown. What it lacks is dense and vibrant neighborhoods outside of downtown other than Broad Ripple. It is very suburban in nature overall and the ultra conservative government that controls the state have really hurt quality urban planning and the mayor isn't the greatest in that area also. Columbus has many more quality urban neighborhoods in the city away from downtown and the downtown area itself is improving rapidly with tons of apartments and some condos being built, more retail, Columbus Commons and beautiful riverfront now and more. So Indy will have to compete more with its neighbor to the east. Competition is good though because cities will begin to do what it takes to lure businesses, residents etc into the core of the city and make it more livable and vibrant!

Great set! And you covered a lot of ground in an hour!

Work sends me to random places throughout the year on behalf of our client - I'm hoping Indy is one of them so I can finally check it out. I've always been interested in the city.

You make my adopted hometown look great! I agree, you made great time on your little walk. Had I known you were swinging through I could have met up with you.

Great pics! I agree with wheelingman regarding Indy's lack of urban character outside of downtown. What is considered "urban" for Indy are equivalent to older suburbs in most other Midwestern cities. It does have a nice downtown, though it has its fair share of tacky chains.

Yeah Indy's neighborhoods may not be as cool as some other cities but I still love it here. I have been exploring St Louis a lot lately via street view. Easy to see why everybody raves about it. I'll have to buy me a Cardinal cap and come over and explore it some time in detail.

You should visit St.Louis. I love it there. I went there before and didn't have enough time to really do much and it got dark. So I decided to take a vacation to St. Louis and asked a friend to come along. It was so worth it and the 9 hour drive. I could see myself living there and being happy. I just have too many health issues to move but I love Pittsburgh a lot anyway.

I was in Indianapolis for a photo gig a few years back - I was pleasantly surprised at how great *and* awful parts of downtown were. For example the state capitol building - gorgeous exterior, absolutely stunning interior and then... a surface lot as soon as you exit the north side of the building. Then the architectural gems like the Repertory Theatre, Circle Tower, etc. and while every city has clunkers, Indy seemed to have more than its fair share - that Hyatt is quite possibly one of the most vile I've ever seen. One of those cities that has a lot more going on than they get credit for, but not quite where I would want to be. Still had a great time and wish I had more time to explore outside of downtown - maybe some day.
